COMMEMORATING the 90th Anniversary of The Landmark
Theatre, formerly known as the Loew's State Theatre,
which officially opened on February 18, 1928 in the
heart of Downtown Syracuse at 362 S. Salina Street

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to honor and
congratulate The Landmark Theatre upon the occasion of its 90th
Anniversary of providing Central New Yorkers with an historic,
world-class entertainment venue; and

WHEREAS, On February 19, 1926, Marcus Loew announced plans to build
a new theatre to be designed by famed architect, Thomas W. Lamb, which
remains today, the City's only surviving example of the opulent
theatrical venues of the 1920s; and

WHEREAS, The Loew's State Theatre officially opened on February 18,
1928, and initially offered silent films and famous vaudeville stage
acts during the Great Depression, followed by war films and newsreels
during World War II; and

WHEREAS, By the 1970s, the theatre suffered from low attendance and
was in serious disrepair, closing its doors on May 22, 1975; in danger
of demolition in 1975, the Syracuse Area Landmark Theatre, or SALT, was
established as an agency to preserve and renovate the theatre, and it
reopened on July 14, 1975; and

WHEREAS, By October 11, 1977, SALT raised $65,000 dollars from a
sold-out benefit concert with Harry Chapin, and used the money to
purchase the property from Sutton Real Estate, and was renamed "The
Landmark Theatre"; and

WHEREAS, On May 3, 1976, the US Department of the Interior listed
The Landmark Theatre in the National Register of Historic Places; and

WHEREAS, Today, The Landmark Theatre boasts its strongest staff in
decades, and has incredible support from the community and local
businesses as evidenced by its strong board membership and theatre
leadership; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the 90th Anniversary of The Landmark Theatre; and be it
further

RESOLVED, That copies of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to representatives of The Landmark Theatre.
