Senate Resolution No. 4064

COMMENDING the Brooklyn Arts Exchange upon the
occasion of celebrating 25 years of Artists in
Residence on March 25, 2018
WHEREAS, It is the intent of this Legislative Body to commemorate
those events of historical significance which add strength, vigor and
inspiration to the cultural diversity and quality of life in the
communities of the State of New York; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to
commend the Brooklyn Arts Exchange upon the occasion of celebrating 25
years of Artists in Residence, to be feted at a Gala on Sunday, March
25, 2018, at Roulette in Brooklyn, New York; and
WHEREAS, In addition, Founder/Executive Director Marya Warshaw will
be recognized for her luminous leadership and her lasting contributions
to arts, culture and education for the local community; and
WHEREAS, This festive party will feature performance, video, and
commentary by several talented artists; and
WHEREAS, Founded in 1991, the Brooklyn Arts Exchange (BAX) strives
to provide a nurturing, year-round, performance, rehearsal and
educational venue in Brooklyn which encourages artistic risk-taking and
stimulates dialogue among diverse constituencies; and
WHEREAS, This community-based performing arts center diligently
works to develop artists of all ages, from children to professionals who
are mentored by expert directors and choreographers; and
WHEREAS, In 1993, BAX established its Artist in Residence program
with two artists, Reggie Wilson and George Emilio Sanchez; through their
input, this vital organization identified a need for space, a desire for
opportunities to investigate specific aesthetic and cultural concerns,
and an interest in curating work by other artists to build community and
extend their own artistic practice; and
WHEREAS, BAX welcomes and supports individuals and groups of all
origins, ages, abilities, races, sexual orientations, genders, and
varied immigration status; and
WHEREAS, The success of BAX's Artist in Residence Program is in
direct correlation to the efforts of its staff, whose involvement is,
and always has been, characterized by an impressive commitment, an
unbridled enthusiasm, and an uncompromising standard of excellence in
all endeavors on behalf of the institution and the community it serves;
and
WHEREAS, It is most fitting that we take time to celebrate the arts
of our Nation, to honor artists, and to express our appreciation to
everyone who patronizes the arts; and as we celebrate the arts, we
celebrate and give thanks to our American freedom, the only atmosphere
in which artists can truly create and in which art is truly the
expression of the soul; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commend the Brooklyn Arts Exchange upon the occasion of celebrating 25
years of Artists in Residence on March 25, 2018; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to Marya Warshaw, Founder/Executive Director, Brooklyn Arts
Exchange.
