HONORING Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. Sigma
Psi Omega Chapter upon the occasion of its
designation for special recognition by the Tri
Community and Youth Agency on March 22, 2018

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to commend those
illustrious organizations within the State of New York whose focus and
intent have made a substantial impact on the quality of life in their
communities; and

WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long- standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to
honor Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. Sigma Psi Omega Chapter upon the
occasion of its designation for special recognition by the Tri Community
and Youth Agency, to be celebrated at its Hall of Honor event on
Thursday, March 22, 2018, at the Woodbury Country Club, Woodbury, New
York; and

WHEREAS, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. Sigma Psi Omega Chapter
was chartered on June 23, 1990, in Hauppauge, New York, by past North
Atlantic Regional Director Idell S. Pugh and 27 charter members; and

WHEREAS, The Chapter's early achievements include the establishment
of its Youth of Distinction Program, economic empowerment, and
fundraising for the Long Island Diabetes Foundation; and

WHEREAS, In keeping with Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority's purpose, the
Ivy AKA-demy program was created in the Wyandanch community in 1991; the
program focused on making a positive impact on local youth socially,
academically, and economically, as well as to serve as role models,
while forging alliances with parent support groups, community leaders
and the business community; and

WHEREAS, Today, Sigma Psi Omega has contributed countless volunteer
hours to numerous community initiatives, providing healthy meals and
educational activities through Kids Club to the children of Family
Service League South Shore/Brentwood and TriCYA Huntington; and

WHEREAS, Sigma Psi Omega also sponsors the Holiday Community
Outreach Celebration for men, women, and children in need, and supports
Suffolk County youth through scholarships, incentive awards and
recognition programs; and

WHEREAS, Furthermore, this vital organization provides food items to
several local soup kitchens, and donates school supplies, book bags, and
toys to children of incarcerated and drug dependent parents with the
Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependency (LICADD); and

WHEREAS, Remaining true to its mission, Sigma Psi Omega cultivates
and encourages high scholastic and ethical standards, promotes unity and
friendship among college women, helps to alleviate problems concerning
girls and women in order to improve their social stature, maintains

progressive interest in college life, and is truly of "Service to All
Mankind"; and

WHEREAS, The success of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. Sigma
Psi Omega Chapter is in direct correlation to the efforts of its
members, whose involvement is, and always has been, characterized by an
impressive commitment, an unbridled enthusiasm, and an uncompromising
standard of excellence in all endeavors on behalf of the sorority and
the population it serves; and

WHEREAS, In light of its commitment, dedication, and successful
efforts, it is the practice of this Legislative Body to extend its
highest commendation to the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. Sigma Psi
Omega Chapter; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. Sigma Psi Omega Chapter upon the
occasion of its designation for special recognition by the Tri Community
and Youth Agency on March 22, 2018; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. Sigma Psi Omega Chapter.
