COMMENDING Margaret F. Boorstein upon the occasion
of her designation for special recognition by North
Shore Synagogue on April 28, 2018
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize the
efforts of those individuals within the State of New York who give of
their time and energies in support of spiritual endeavors which aim to
benefit the community at large; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to
commend Margaret F. Boorstein upon the occasion of her designation for
special recognition by North Shore Synagogue to be feted at its 65th
Anniversary Celebration on Saturday, April 28, 2018; and
WHEREAS, Margaret was born to the former Florence Burg and Sy H.
Friedman; she grew up in the Manhattan neighborhood of Inwood where she
attended New York City public schools; an excellent student, she
graduated from the Bronx High School of Science; and
WHEREAS, Margaret F. Boorstein earned her degree in mathematics from
Barnard College; during this time, she worked part-time for a market
research firm as a coder, and was a camp counselor at Camp Edward Isaacs
and a Water Safety Instructor at the Federation of Jewish Philanthropies
Wel-Met Camp In Barryville, New York; and
WHEREAS, In 1974, Margaret married Joseph Boorstein, and they lived
in Washington Heights while she finished graduate school, earning a
Ph.D. in geography from Columbia University; and
WHEREAS, In September of 1976, Margaret F. Boorstein began her long
and distinguished career in education as an adjunct professor in
geography at C.W. Post College; today, after 43 years of service, she is
both a full professor and chair of the Earth and Environmental Science
Department; and
WHEREAS, In this capacity, Margaret F. Boorstein successfully led
her campus through two 10-year re-accreditation cycles required by the
Middle States Commission on Higher Education; she was also instrumental
in developing undergraduate and graduate degrees in environmental
sustainability; and
WHEREAS, In addition to her work with C.W. Post, Margaret F.
Boorstein conducts field studies at our great country's National Parks,
and is a consultant for Outcomes Assessment; and
WHEREAS, In 1980, Margaret F. Boorstein and her husband bought a
house in East Norwich, New York, where they raised their two children;
the boys attended North Shore Synagogue's Nursery School, and Oyster Bay
High School, where Margaret served as co-President of the PTSA, and
Chair of the Site-Based Team of shared governance with the New York
State Department of Education; the boys eventually graduated from North
Shore Synagogue Religious School; and
WHEREAS, Dedicated to her faith and synagogue, Margaret F. Boorstein
served as both an officer and trustee, and is a vital member of the
Mitzvah and Caring Community, where she makes and organizes the delivery
of shiva baskets; and
WHEREAS, When she is not working or helping someone, Margaret F.
Boorstein enjoys traveling to baseball stadiums all over the country
with her son; she runs almost every morning, and when she finally gets
some down time, she enjoys reading a good book and indulging in a piece
of chocolate; and
WHEREAS, With her throughout have been her husband, Joseph, and
their two sons, Douglas and Thomas, all of whom feel privileged to be a
part of her life and rejoice in her achievements; and
WHEREAS, Throughout its rich historical past and up to the present
day, the North Shore Synagogue has been sustained by the beneficent
efforts of countless congregants such as Margaret F. Boorstein, who have
generously supported their temple with abundant kindness and good deeds;
now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commend Margaret F. Boorstein upon the occasion of her designation for
special recognition by North Shore Synagogue, noting her unremitting
commitment, ceaseless devotion and spiritual resolve; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to Margaret F. Boorstein.
