MOURNING the death of James Hoyt Sr., beloved ski
patroller, distinguished citizen and devoted member
of his community

WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to pay tribute to
citizens of the State of New York whose lifework and civic endeavor
served to enhance the quality of life in their communities and the great
State of New York; and

WHEREAS, James Hoyt Sr., of Wilmington, New York, died on Thursday,
February 22, 2018, at the age of 80; and

WHEREAS, James Hoyt Sr. was bon to the former Pearl Warner and Aaron
Hoyt on May 9, 1937; he married his first wife, the late Barbara Jette
in 1955, and together, they had four sons; he later married Anna
Kucharska on December 31, 1996, at St. Bernard's Church in Saranac Lake,
New York; and

WHEREAS, Raised in Saranac Lake, New York, James Hoyt Sr. graduated
from Saranac Lake High School; as a young boy, he worked for Hemlock
Hill Potato Farm; and

WHEREAS, James Hoyt Sr. loved his horses; he was very active in the
rodeo circuit, and enjoyed showing his prized quarter horses at various
events across the country; and

WHEREAS, James Hoyt Sr. was an entrepreneur; he and his family
founded Saranac Lake Speedway, and he owned and operated the Lakeside
Garage; a member of the million mile driver's license club, he served as
a driver for the 1980 United States Men's Olympic Hockey team and the
Ice Follies; and

WHEREAS, A man of many interests, James Hoyt Sr. loved to spend time
outdoors, whether it was playing golf or snow skiing; from 1958-2018, he
served as a member of the Whiteface Mountain Ski Patrol; well-respected
by all, he was one of the oldest ski patrollers in the United States,
and has a trail named after him at Whiteface Mountain called Hoyt's
High; he could often be found wearing a red baseball cap with the words
"Hoyt's High" stitched into it; and

WHEREAS, James Hoyt Sr. died on the mountain, doing what he loved
most; he was an interesting and fun-loving man who lived each and every
day to the fullest; and

WHEREAS, Predeceased by one brother, Allen Hoyt, James Hoyt Sr., is
survived by his wife Anna; four sons, Allen (Mary Beth) Hoyt, Robert
Hoyt, Michael (Mary) Hoyt, and James Hoyt; one sister, Carol Hesseltine;
seven grandchildren, Erica (Pete), Greg, Megan, Robert, Andrea, Hanna
and Brittney; and six great-grandchildren, as well as several nieces and
nephews; and

WHEREAS, Armed with a humanistic spirit and imbued with a sense of
compassion, James Hoyt Sr., leaves behind a legacy which will long

endure the passage of time and will remain as a comforting memory to all
he served and befriended; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
mourn the death of James Hoyt Sr., beloved ski patroller, distinguished
citizen and devoted member of his community; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to the family of James Hoyt Sr.
