HONORING Daniel A. Nigro upon the occasion of his
designation as recipient of the Firefighters & EMS
Foundation Special Achievement Award by the National
Police Defense Foundation
WHEREAS, Citizens across our State and Nation are inspired by and
indebted to our valiant firefighters who exhibit courage and bravery
every day in the course of their duties; and
WHEREAS, Firefighters exemplify the power of human compassion and
the strength of the American spirit through actions of the most heroic
magnitude; their sacrifices and their selfless dedication merit tribute
and recognition by all citizens of this great country; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to honor Daniel A.
Nigro upon the occasion of his designation as recipient of the
Firefighters & EMS Foundation Special Achievement Award by the National
Police Defense Foundation, to be celebrated at its Annual Awards Dinner
on Wednesday, May 2, 2018, at Russo's on the Bay, Howard Beach, New
York; and
WHEREAS, Daniel A. Nigro currently serves as the 33rd Fire
Commissioner of the City of New York Fire Department; and
WHEREAS, Appointed by Mayor Bill de Blasio in 2014, Daniel A. Nigro
serves as civilian administrator and head of the Department; he is only
the sixth individual to hold every rank in the agency's history; and
WHEREAS, Daniel A. Nigro began his illustrious career as a
Firefighter at Engine 21 in Manhattan on November 29, 1969; rising
through the ranks, he served as a Lieutenant at Engine 35 in East
Harlem; in Division 14 in Queens and Engine 8 in Manhattan as a Captain;
and in Battalion 19 in the Bronx and Battalion 28 in Brooklyn as a
Battalion Chief; and
WHEREAS, In his capacity as Battalion Chief, Daniel A. Nigro served
in several administrative positions at Headquarters including the Chief
of Personnel and the Chief of the Bureau of Health Services; and
WHEREAS, Upon his promotion to Deputy Chief in 1993, Daniel A. Nigro
served in Division 3 in Manhattan; one year later he was appointed
Deputy Assistant Chief, during which time he was instrumental in merging
the Emergency Medical Service into the FDNY; and
WHEREAS, Following the merger, Daniel A. Nigro became the Chief in
Charge of EMS, and in 1997, he was promoted to Chief of Operations,
overseeing all operations and training for more than 14,000 uniformed
Fire and EMS personnel; and
WHEREAS, Daniel A. Nigro was appointed to Chief of Department
following the September 11, 2001, attacks on the World Trade Center;
during this time, he was responsible for overseeing all rescue and
recovery operations at the World Trade Center and the beginning of the
unprecedented rebuilding of the Department; and
WHEREAS, In this capacity, Daniel A. Nigro held the highest
uniformed rank, overseeing all major FDNY Bureaus including: Operations,
Training, EMS, Communications and Fire Prevention; and
WHEREAS, Daniel A. Nigro is the son of FDNY Captain Daniel Nigro; he
currently resides in Queens with his wife, Lynn; and
WHEREAS, It takes a special dedication, a strong desire to help
others and a tireless sense of community to forsake precious time with
family and friends to respond to the signal that a neighbor is in need;
Daniel A. Nigro is such a firefighter; throughout many years of devoted
service, this esteemed man heroically performed, above and beyond the
call of duty, those responsibilities which define the task of fire
protection; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Daniel A. Nigro upon the occasion of his designation as recipient
of the Firefighters & EMS Foundation Special Achievement Award by the
National Police Defense Foundation; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to Daniel A. Nigro.
