MEMORIALIZING Governor Andrew M. Cuomo to proclaim
April 29, 2018, as Make-A-Wish Day in the State of
New York, in conjunction with the observance of
World Wish Day

WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to recognize
official days that are set aside to increase awareness of actions that
affect the lives of sick children in New York State; and

WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to
memorialize Governor Andrew M. Cuomo to proclaim April 29, 2018, as
Make-A-Wish Day in the State of New York, in conjunction with the
observance of World Wish Day; and

WHEREAS, It was the wish of seven-year-old Leukemia sufferer Chris
Greicius to become a police officer; when police heard about this they
wanted to help and granted his wish; and

WHEREAS, Young Chris was a police officer for one day on the 29th of
April in 1980; others heard about this and thought that granting wishes
for sick children was a good idea; subsequently, the Make-A-Wish
Foundation was founded and became one of the best-known children's
charities in the world; and

WHEREAS, This led to the birth of World Wish Day, the anniversary of
the day the police granted Chris' wish; and

WHEREAS, There are now 48 countries involved in World Wish Day;
people celebrate wish-granting across the globe by making dreams come
true for sick children; and

WHEREAS, Anyone who wants to get involved in this celebration can
spread the word using social media sites, donate money to the charity or
refer a child they know; and

WHEREAS, It is imperative that there be greater awareness of this
vital day and the much appreciated and valuable wishes the Make-A-Wish
Foundation grants to the sick children of our State and Nation; now,
therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
memorialize Governor Andrew M. Cuomo to proclaim April 29, 2018, as
Make-A-Wish Day in the State of New York, in conjunction with the
observance of World Wish Day; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to The Honorable Andrew M. Cuomo, Governor of the State of
New York.
