HONORING five staff members from the Orange-Ulster
BOCES Regional Office of Interscholastic Athletics
upon the occasion of their designation as recipients
of a Liberty Medal, the highest honor bestowed upon
an individual by the New York State Senate
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize and
commend the caring concern and heroic acts of individuals who take
prompt and appropriate action in emergency situations, remaining calm
under pressure, in an effort to preserve the life of another; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor
five staff members from the Orange-Ulster BOCES Regional Office of
Interscholastic Athletics upon the occasion of their designation as
recipients of a Liberty Medal, the highest honor bestowed upon an
individual by the New York State Senate; and
WHEREAS, The New York State Senate Liberty Medal was established by
Resolution and is awarded to individuals who have merited special
commendation for exceptional, heroic, or humanitarian acts on behalf of
their fellow New Yorkers; and
WHEREAS, The collective quick thinking of Dan Morse, Amanda York,
Christopher Mayo, Doug Stahl and Heather Walsh helped save the life of a
man who collapsed in their office; and
WHEREAS, On the morning of January 31, 2018, a longtime baseball
official from Dutchess County arrived in the lobby of the Orange-Ulster
BOCES Regional Office of Interscholastic Athletics and collapsed; and
WHEREAS, Christopher Mayo and his staff quickly responded to help
the unconscious man; Heather Walsh and Doug Stahl ran to nearby C.J.
Hooker Middle School to find a nurse; and
WHEREAS, While Christopher Mayo communicated with the 911
dispatcher, Dan Morse and Amanda York, both Athletic Programs Assistants
and certified American Red Cross CPR/AED First Aid Instructors,
administered CPR; working together and using their training, they were
able to revive the baseball official; and
WHEREAS, The Village of Goshen Police, a Deputy from the Orange
County Sheriff's Office and local EMT's arrived on the scene; the man
was taken to Orange Regional Medical Center in Middletown and is now
doing well; and
WHEREAS, The decisive actions of these five individuals saved a
life; without hesitation, they came to the rescue of a man who
desperately needed it, keeping it cool and working together during an
unnerving moment, which is truly a credit to their training and
professionalism; and
WHEREAS, These five individuals, through their spontaneous and
heroic actions, demonstrated their character and compassion for the
welfare of others, personifying, by virtue of their actions, the
collective concern of ordinary citizens across the community of the
State of New York who voluntarily respond when others are in need of
help; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor five staff members from the Orange-Ulster BOCES Regional Office of
Interscholastic Athletics upon the occasion of their designation as
recipients of a Liberty Medal, the highest honor bestowed upon an
individual by the New York State Senate; and be it further
RESOLVED, That copies of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to Dan Morse, Amanda York, Christopher Mayo, Doug Stahl and
Heather Walsh.
