Senate Resolution No. 4636
BY: Senator PARKER
MEMORIALIZING Governor Andrew M. Cuomo to proclaim
April 5, 2018, as Go for Broke Day in the State of
New York, in conjunction with the observation of
National Go for Broke Day
WHEREAS, There are times in our lives when we have to face our
fears, push past all boundaries, and pursue our goals with tenacity and
determination; this day is dedicated to "going for broke", a term taken
to mean that you are giving everything you got; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to memorialize
Governor Andrew M. Cuomo to proclaim April 5, 2018, as Go for Broke Day
in the State of New York, in conjunction with the observance of National
Go for Broke Day; and
WHEREAS, The phrase "go for broke" means to risk it all, even if it
means losing everything; it was adopted from the United States Army
442nd Infantry Regimental Combat Team's unit motto "Go for Broke", which
was derived from the Hawaiian pidgin phrase used by craps shooters
risking all their money in one roll of the dice; and
WHEREAS, Considered to be the most decorated infantry regiment in
the history of the United States Army, the 442nd Infantry Regimental
Combat Team was a fighting unit composed mainly of American soldiers of
Japanese descent who had volunteered to fight during World War II; and
WHEREAS, On April 5, 1945, Sadao S. Munemori, a member of the 442nd
Regimental Combat Team risked it all to save two of his men at the cost
of his own life and did much to clear the path for his company's
victorious advance near Seravezza, Italy; and
WHEREAS, Many of us go about our daily lives playing it safe, not
taking big chances; Go for Broke Day is a day to put it all on the line,
and take a risk; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
memorialize Governor Andrew M. Cuomo to proclaim April 5, 2018, as Go
for Broke Day in the State of New York, in conjunction with the
observance of National Go for Broke Day; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to The Honorable Andrew M. Cuomo, Governor of the State of
New York.
