CONGRATULATING Josephine Emily Jureidini Samms
upon the occasion of celebrating her 100th Birthday
WHEREAS, Senior citizens bring a wealth of experience and knowledge
to the increasingly active roles they play in today's society; their
past contributions and future participation are a vital part of, and
valuable asset to, the fabric of community life and activity; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to
congratulate Josephine Emily Jureidini Samms upon the occasion of
celebrating her 100th Birthday on Saturday, January 28, 2017, at
Antun's, Queens Village, New York; and
WHEREAS, Born in 1917, Josephine Emily Jureidini Samms is the third
child of Marie Baxter Jureidini and Najeeb "Phillip Micheal" Jureidini;
as the first girl, she was loved and protected by her older brothers
Ameen and Sahid, and adored by her five younger siblings, Winifred,
Mavis, Haloon, Charles and Horace; and
WHEREAS, Josephine Emily Jureidini Samms, affectionately known as
Joe, is grateful to both parents for instilling core values of a strong
Christian faith, family unity, self-determination and the importance of
education; and
WHEREAS, With a true passion for caring for the sick, Josephine
Emily Jureidini Samms earned a degree from the Nursing School at
Kingston Public Hospital where she would eventually meet her future
husband, Lloyd Samms; and
WHEREAS, Josephine Emily Jureidini Samms began her illustrious
nursing career at St. Joseph's Hospital as a private nurse before coming
to the United States in the late 1950s; and
WHEREAS, Known for her caring heart and healing hands, Josephine
Emily Jureidini Samms was honored by the New York State Nurses
Association after 25 years of distinguished service as a Registered
Professional Nurse; and
WHEREAS, Josephine Emily Jureidini Samms has given tirelessly of her
time and energies to countless charities throughout Brooklyn; and
WHEREAS, Revered for her love, loyalty, fortitude, ethical standards
and moral fiber, Josephine Emily Jureidini Samm, with her zest for life,
has inspired and enhanced the lives of her family and friends; and
WHEREAS, This exceptional centenarian has experienced the incredible
joys and sorrows characteristic of and reserved for those with the
stamina and courage to savor a full life; and
WHEREAS, Josephine Emily Jureidini Samms has enriched the lives of
those around her through her joyous and sincere love for others and
through the quiescent charm and wisdom which comes only from a fullness
of years; and
WHEREAS, It is the intent of this Legislative Body to publicly
recognize those who have reached such a remarkable age and who have
witnessed and celebrated the innovations, cultural developments and
awesome achievements of this country during the last century, while
themselves contributing to the growth and excellence of this great
Empire State; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
congratulate Josephine Emily Jureidini Samms upon the occasion of
celebrating her 100th Birthday; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to Josephine Emily Jureidini Samms.
