HONORING Stan Brodsky upon the occasion of his
designation as recipient of the 2018 President's
Award by the Huntington Arts Council on May 17, 2018

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to pay tribute to
those individuals of historic and artistic significance whose creative
talents have contributed to the cultural enrichment of our communities
and our Nation; and

WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor
Stan Brodsky upon the occasion of his designation as recipient of the
2018 President's Award by the Huntington Arts Council to be celebrated
at its 55th Anniversary Gala on Thursday, May 17, 2018, at Huntington
Fine Arts in Greenlawn, New York; and

WHEREAS, The Huntington Arts Council provides educational
programming while nurturing and preserving art and culture on Long
Island; in 2017, this vital organization reached over one million people
through various events including the Summer Arts Festival, Arts in
Education, Exhibitions at its Gallery, and the NYSCA Decentralization
Grant Program throughout Long Island; the Council also produces a
Cultural Arts Newsletter; and

WHEREAS, Stan Brodsky is receiving this prestigious award for his
steadfast and unremitting commitment to the arts; and

WHEREAS, Born and raised in Brooklyn, New York, Stan Brodsky proudly
served his country as a member of the United States Armed Forces during
World War II; and

WHEREAS, Upon the completion of Stan Brodsky's military service, he
earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in Photo Journalism from Missouri
University in 1949; one year later, he received his Master of Fine Art
degree in Painting from Iowa University before returning to his home
state where he furthered his education by obtaining his Doctorate in Art
Education from Columbia University in 1959; and

WHEREAS, Throughout his long and distinguished career, Stan Brodsky
has held several academic positions and has served as a lecturer at
numerous colleges and universities; and

WHEREAS, Stan Brodsky has been an exhibiting artists in New York
City for more than 50 years, showcasing his colorful and layered
landscapes; and

WHEREAS, For his incredible and thought provoking work, Stan Brodsky
has been the recipient of numerous awards and accolades including the
1991 Trustees Award from Long Island University; he was named the 2015
ARTHAMPTONS Honoree, 2013 Heckscher Museum "Celebrate Achievement"
Honoree, and 2009 Long Island Art League Honoree, and received the 1987,
1996, and 2004 Yaddo Artists Retreat Fellowship, the 1998 Richard

Florsheim Art Fund Grant, and a 1985, 1986, and 1989 Fellowship at
Virginia Center for Creative Arts; and

WHEREAS, It is most fitting that we take time to celebrate the arts
of our Nation, to honor our artists, and to express our appreciation to
everyone who patronizes the arts; and as we celebrate the arts, we
celebrate and give thanks to our American freedom, the only atmosphere
in which artists can truly create and in which art is truly the
expression of the soul; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Stan Brodsky upon the occasion of his designation as recipient of
the 2018 President's Award by the Huntington Arts Council on May 17,
2018; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to Stan Brodsky.
