COMMEMORATING the 125th Anniversary of White
Plains Hospital
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize those
institutions which have faithfully served the health needs of the
community and its citizens with diligence and compassionate commitment;
and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to
commemorate the 125th Anniversary of White Plains Hospital, to be
celebrated with a Gala on Saturday, September 29, 2018, at Sleepy Hollow
Country Club, Briarcliff Manor, New York; and
WHEREAS, White Plains Hospital has a tradition of excellence that
has earned it an outstanding reputation for high-quality care and
friendliness, a tradition that has deep roots in the past; and
WHEREAS, In 1893, a dedicated group of 22 women and three men came
together to establish a voluntary, not-for-profit hospital for their
community; and
WHEREAS, In its first year, White Plains Hospital cared for 31
patients; today, more than a century later, nearly 200,000 patients
receive treatments in its facilities annually; and
WHEREAS, White Plains Hospital has a rich history, with origins
dating back to a small house on Chatterton Hill, with four beds and
other furnishings given by the women from its first Board of Managers;
and
WHEREAS, Over the decades, White Plains Hospital purchased the
property on which the present hospital now stands in 1907, opened an
Outpatient Department Clinic in 1930, and established the first Coronary
Care Unit in the County in 1966; and
WHEREAS, In the early 1980s, the Hospital began focusing on the
healthcare needs of the elderly and created the Senior Services Program,
an information and referral service, providing assistance to elderly
individuals needing medical, social and financial services; and
WHEREAS, Furthermore, White Plains Hospital opened the first fully
self-contained Ambulatory Surgery Center in Westchester County in 1984,
to accommodate patients who require surgery of short duration without
hospitalization; and
WHEREAS, Recognizing the specialized needs of patients with
diabetes, White Plains Hospital opened a Diabetes Cluster in 1990, where
specially trained nurses offer the most advanced medical technology with
compassionate personal care; and
WHEREAS, That same year, the Hospital became the first in the County
to add a certified midwife to the medical staff, and in 1993, the
Neonatal Special Care Unit was created to help premature and ill newborn
babies survive; and
WHEREAS, In August of 1996, White Plains Hospital signed a historic
alliance agreement designed to strengthen community-based health care
services for area residents; in partnership with Northern Westchester
Hospital Center of Mount Kisco, White Plains Hospital became a founding
member of what is now known as Stellaris Health Network, Inc., creating
the region's premier health system; and
WHEREAS, The Dickstein Cancer Treatment Center, which opened in
April of 1999, is the only freestanding building in Westchester County
devoted entirely to cancer treatment; two years later, the Hospital's
WPHC Cancer Program was designated an American College of Surgeons
Approved Community Hospital Comprehensive Cancer Program; and
WHEREAS, In June of 2001, the Hospital celebrated the opening of The
William & Sylvia Silberstein Neonatal & Maternity Center, a 30,000
square foot facility which provides a full continuum of care from
maternal-fetal medicine through labor and delivery, postpartum,
pediatric and neonatal services; and
WHEREAS, Additionally, White Plains Hospital offers the Westchester
Orthopedic Institute, the Women's Imaging Center, and the Outpatient
Physical Therapy Center and Home Care program; and
WHEREAS, Entering its 125th year, White Plains Hospital remains true
in purpose and strong in spirit, taking just pride in its excellent
facilities, dedicated staff and laudable history of quality health care;
and
WHEREAS, Venerable and trustworthy institutions, tending to the
needs of the community and its citizenry, represent the threads from
which the fabric of society is woven, and so now this Legislative Body
is moved to recognize the beneficent good works of White Plains
Hospital, sharing the pride of its history and accomplishments, and
anticipating its future of continued growth in quality and personalized
care; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the 125th Anniversary of White Plains Hospital; and be it
further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to White Plains Hospital.
