Senate Resolution No. 4812

BY: Senator PARKER

COMMENDING AARP New York upon the occasion of
hosting its Annual Kick-Off Shred Event on April 25,
2018

WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to recognize
important events that are held within our communities designed to
protect and enhance the quality of life for the residents of this great
State of New York; and

WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to
commend AARP upon the occasion of hosting its Annual Kick-Off Shred
Event on Wednesday, April 25, 2018, at Glory of God Christian Center,
Brooklyn, New York; and

WHEREAS, For the past several years, as part of AARP's nationwide
project, Operation Stop Scams, AARP New York has conducted a Kick-Off
Shred Event in each borough in the month of April, followed by other
events throughout the year; and

WHEREAS, Every two seconds in the United States, someone's identity
is stolen; shredding confidential documents you no longer need is one
good way to protect yourself, and the AARP Fraud Watch Network is
dedicated to helping; and

WHEREAS, Identity theft is one of the most prevalent types of fraud
encountered by people age 50 and over; by doing something as simple as
shredding documents, New Yorkers can safeguard their identity along with
their hard earned credit rating and retirement savings from unscrupulous
thieves; and

WHEREAS, It is imperative that there be greater awareness of this
serious confidentiality issue, and more must be done to increase
shredding activities at the local, State and National levels; now,
therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commend AARP New York upon the occasion of hosting its Annual Kick-Off
Shred Event on April 25, 2018; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to AARP New York.
