CELEBRATING the Third Annual POWER ON THE RISE
Brunch on April 21, 2018
WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to recognize that
the quality and character of life in the communities across New York
State are reflective of the concerned and dedicated efforts of those
organizations and individuals who would devote themselves to the welfare
of the community and its citizenry; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to
celebrate the Third Annual POWER ON THE RISE Brunch on Saturday, April
21, 2018, at St. Paul's Church in Flatbush, organized and hosted by the
Flatbush Tenant Coalition; and
WHEREAS, The Flatbush Development Corporation (FDC), the parent
company of the Flatbush Tenant Coalition (FTC), was formed in 1975 by a
group of homeowners and tenants who were concerned about growing signs
of deterioration in the neighborhood; the group organized tenants in
apartment buildings to combat poor conditions and prevent arson and
abandonment and worked with merchants on the neighborhood's commercial
strips; and
WHEREAS, FDC's mission is to enhance the quality of life for all
segments of the Flatbush community; it identifies and responds to
neighborhood needs and concerns, proactively creating programs and
campaigns that work towards a healthy, safe and vibrant community; its
economic development, housing, youth, and immigration programs serve the
exceptionally diverse needs of its community; and
WHEREAS, The FDC works with tenant associations, including the
Flatbush Tenant Coalition, and individuals to resolve disputes with
landlords and encourage improved building conditions and safety; and
WHEREAS, Currently, the Flatbush Tenant Coalition represents
approximately 19,000 tenants; the group's work includes improving
housing conditions, educating tenants about their rights, advising
tenants where to turn for assistance and providing youth services; and
WHEREAS, The FTC brings tenant neighbors together for the Annual
Power on the Rise Brunch to enjoy music, to hear from community leaders,
to honor coalition members who have passed away in the previous year,
and pay tribute to those individuals who dedicate their time and effort
to their community; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that when
organizations of such noble aims and accomplishments are brought to our
attention, they should be celebrated and recognized by all the citizens
of this great Empire State; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commend the Flatbush Tenant Coalition upon the occasion of hosting its
Third Annual POWER ON THE RISE Brunch on April 21, 2018; and be it
further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to the Flatbush Tenant Coalition.
