COMMEMORATING the 100th Anniversary of Treadwell
Farm Historic District Association, Inc. and the
50th Year of its designation as a New York City
Designated Landmark District on April 30, 2018

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to commend the
efforts of those organizations which seek to bring recognition to
historical places within the State of New York, and in so doing, help to
ensure that the complete history of our State and Nation is preserved
and shared with present generations of citizens; and

WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to
commemorate the 100th Anniversary of Treadwell Farm Historic District
Association, Inc. and the 50th Year of its designation as a New York
City Designated Landmark District to be celebrated at an event on
Monday, April 30, 2018; and

WHEREAS, Located on Manhattan's Upper East Side, on East 61st and
East 62nd Streets between Second and Third Avenues, the Treadwell Farm
Historic District consists of 76 listed buildings; and

WHEREAS, The district was designated as a landmark district by the
Landmark Preservation Commission on December 13, 1967, making it the
first landmarked district on the Upper East Side and the eighth
designated district after the Commission was formed in 1965; and

WHEREAS, The significant 19th Century residential neighborhood is
filled with low-rise row houses, mainly three and four story residences,
and includes two churches; the majority of the houses were built between
1868 and 1875 in the Italianate and Greek Revival styles; Construction
was governed by a 1868 protective covenant, which remains in force
today; and

WHEREAS, The architectural importance of the Historic District lies
in its consistently residential character, its uniform cornice height,
and in the style of its buildings and care with which those buildings
are preserved; most of the houses have retained a uniform character; and

WHEREAS, Some of the architects who designed buildings on the block
include such notables as Richard Morris Hunt, Samuel A. Warner, James W.
Pirrson and George F. Pelham; and

WHEREAS, The neighborhood is notable for its tree lined streets,
well maintained individual houses, and many rear yard green spaces;
homeowners also take great care to adorn their houses with window boxes
full of colorful flowers; and

WHEREAS, The association was formed in 1920, with only three
members; by 1927, 19 people belonged to the association, 43 by 1928, and
65 by 1971; and

WHEREAS, In December of 1991, the East Sixties Property Owners
Association was incorporated to preserve and protect the serene,
cherished rectangle of houses set in a bright oblong of gardens in the
middle of Manhattan's growing Eastside; and

WHEREAS, On May 27, 2003, the name of the association was formally
changed to Treadwell Farm Historic District Association, Inc.; today, 88
members continue to demonstrate a strong community commitment to
preservation and keeping the neighborhood looking visually appealing;
and

WHEREAS, The residents of Manhattan's Upper East Side consider
themselves fortunate to live in a region dense with historical
architecture, and to the many people who diligently work to preserve
those local memories; and

WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is pleased to have this opportunity
to express its highest admiration for Treadwell Farm Historic District
Association, Inc. and for all of the individuals who have worked to
bring proper attention to a place and time which merits recognition in
the grand panorama of the history of our State and Nation; now,
therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the 100th Anniversary of Treadwell Farm Historic District
Association, Inc. and the 50th Year of its designation as a New York
City Designated Landmark District on April 30, 2018; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to Treadwell Farm Historic District Association, Inc.
