HONORING Robert Kaliban upon the occasion of his
designation for special recognition by the Garden
City Historical Society on May 3, 2018
WHEREAS, Individuals who give of their time and energies and serve
the best interests of their communities are an asset beyond remuneration
and cannot be sufficiently extolled; and
WHEREAS, Robert Kaliban has given not only of his time and energies
but also of his competence, intelligence and leadership and consequently
has been designated for special honor; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to honor Robert
Kaliban upon the occasion of his designation for special recognition by
the Garden City Historical Society, to be celebrated with a Gala on
Thursday, May 3, 2018, at The Cherry Valley Club, Garden City, New York;
and
WHEREAS, An outspoken and passionate Garden City champion and
preservationist, Robert "Bob" Kaliban attended Loras College in Dubuque,
Iowa, where an observant and perspicuous priest-professor changed his
destiny by insisting he join the school theater group; and
WHEREAS, Throughout his illustrious college career, Robert Kaliban
appeared in every production from "Hamlet" to "Finian's Rainbow"; upon
graduation, he went to New York City to audition for The Royal Academy
of Dramatic Art, beating out actors from Yale, Harvard and Columbia
Universities for a scholarship to the London based school; and
WHEREAS, Robert Kaliban married the love of his life, Pat, and
together they moved to Garden City, New York, to raise their children;
and
WHEREAS, During this time, Robert Kaliban pursued his career on
Broadway, starring in roles in "How To Succeed In Business Without
Really Trying," "Ben Franklin in Paris," and "The Conquering Hero"; and
WHEREAS, This extraordinary man has also starred in numerous films
including "Brighton Beach Memoirs," "Lovers and Other Strangers," and
"Schoolhouse Rock"; furthermore, his television credits include
appearances on hits like "The Ed Sullivan Show," "The Tracey Ullman
Show," and "Law and Order"; and
WHEREAS, In the true spirit of giving back, Robert Kaliban has
devoted many years of service to SAG-AFTRA, serving as president of the
New York chapter and as a member of the Board of Trustees of the Pension
and Health Plans for more than 40 years; and
WHEREAS, Robert Kaliban also supported the saving of the historical
clock tower at St. Paul's School when it was in danger of collapsing;
and
WHEREAS, Rare indeed is the impressive dedication shown by an
individual for the benefit of others which Robert Kaliban has displayed
throughout his life; and
WHEREAS, With him throughout have been his wife, Pat, and their
three children, who have all shown him love and support and rejoice in
his many achievements; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that when
individuals of such noble aims and accomplishments are brought to our
attention, they should be celebrated and recognized by all the citizens
of this great Empire State; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Robert Kaliban upon the occasion of his designation for special
recognition by the Garden City Historical Society on May 3, 2018; and be
it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to Robert Kaliban.
