Senate Resolution No. 4925

COMMENDING The Honorable Diana Reyna upon the
occasion of her designation as recipient of the
Frank C. Spinner, Jr. Award on May 15, 2018
WHEREAS, The quality and character of life in this Nation, and the
great State of New York, is reflective of the purposeful lives and good
works of those patriotic and civic-minded community members who dedicate
their lives and careers to the service of others; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to
commend The Honorable Diana Reyna upon the occasion of her designation
as recipient of the Frank C. Spinner, Jr. Award by the Southwest
Brooklyn Industrial Development Corporation to be celebrated at its
Sunset Swing Event on board the Hornblower Hybrid Yacht at Brooklyn Army
Terminal Pier in Sunset Park, Brooklyn, on Tuesday, May 15, 2018; and
WHEREAS, Formed by a group of business owners and community leaders
to enhance the business climate in the waterfront neighborhoods of
Sunset Park, Red Hook and Gowanus, Southwest Brooklyn Industrial
Development Corporation (SBIDC) has helped hundreds of companies
throughout the last four decades; and
WHEREAS, For over two decades, The Honorable Diana Reyna has
demonstrated an outstanding commitment to communities across Brooklyn
through government service and advocacy; the first Dominican American
woman elected to public office in New York State, she served as Deputy
Brooklyn Borough President from 2014-2017, and New York City Council
Member for the 34th Council District from 2001-2013; and
WHEREAS, Throughout her tenure as Deputy President, The Honorable
Diana Reyna diligently worked to improve the lives of the 2.6 million
residents who reside, work and play in New York City's most diverse
borough; and
WHEREAS, Today, The Honorable Diana Reyna continues to support
innovation and high-tech job creation, investing in women- or
minority-owned small businesses, as well as business incubators which
facilitate the critical work of entrepreneurs in creating start-up
companies; she is a strong advocate for preserving an industrial working
waterfront and protecting manufacturing zones throughout New York City;
and
WHEREAS, This dynamic woman also strives to knock down barriers in
the path of men and women who are hoping to make a better life for
themselves by focusing on new and bold ways to tackle Brooklyn's
inequities; and
WHEREAS, The Honorable Diana Reyna is a tireless champion for
expanding educational opportunities and creating new career pathways for
children of color through support for innovative programs such as the
Harbor School and Harbor Middle School proposal; and
WHEREAS, As a New York City Council Member representing the 34th
Council District, The Honorable Diana Reyna gained citywide attention
for her valuable efforts in supporting affordable housing, economic
development, improving equity in education, park space and waste, as
well as expanding both youth and senior services; and
WHEREAS, The Honorable Diana Reyna was also instrumental in gaining
funding for youth programs and family literacy, and making her council
district safer by fighting crime and reducing gang violence; and
WHEREAS, In addition, The Honorable Diana Reyna sponsored
legislation to change the Administrative Code of the City of New York,
in relation to increasing fines for illegal conversions from industrial
to residential uses; the bill was later signed into law by former Mayor
Michael Bloomberg; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that those
individuals who enhance the well-being and vitality of their community
and have shown a long and sustained commitment to excellence certainly
have earned the recognition and applause of all the citizens of this
great Empire State; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commend The Honorable Diana Reyna upon the occasion of her designation
as recipient of the Frank C. Spinner, Jr. Award on May 15, 2018; and be
it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to The Honorable Diana Reyna.
