HONORING Dr. Doris McEwen upon the occasion of her
designation as recipient of the Education Award by
The Brooklyn Club of the National Association of
Negro Business and Professional Women's Clubs, Inc.

WHEREAS, It is the practice of this Legislative Body to take note of
and publicly acknowledge individuals of remarkable integrity and
character whose endeavors have enhanced the quality of education in the
great State of New York; and

WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to honor Dr. Doris
McEwen upon the occasion of her designation as recipient of the
Education Award by The Brooklyn Club of the National Association of
Negro Business and Professional Women's Clubs, Inc., to be celebrated at
its 51st Annual Founders' Day Observance, "Empowering Communities and
Shaping Lives," on Saturday, April 28, 2018, at Gargiulo's Restaurant,
Brooklyn, New York; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Doris McEwen joined Medgar Evers College with a rich
background in K-12 education, blended with experiences in university
teaching and administration; she was superintendent of schools in Clover
Park School District in Lakewood, Washington, high school principal in
East Lansing, Michigan, and worked in positions at the state, district,
and corporate levels; and

WHEREAS, Throughout her illustrious career in education, Dr. Doris
McEwen also taught at the University of Nevada as well as Indiana
University where she served as department chair in educational
administration, helping them establish a principals' certification
program using problems of practice as a focus; and

WHEREAS, Furthermore, at the University of Washington, Dr. Doris
McEwen was selected for the coveted Distinguished P-12 Educator
position; she also served as senior lecturer in the Leadership for
Learning superintendent and Danforth principals' certification programs,
and as administrator for College of Education partnerships; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Doris McEwen was instrumental in the establishment of
the Masters of Educational Administration program at Zayed University in
Dubai, teaching there for two years during the intersessions from the
University of Washington; and

WHEREAS, This extraordinary woman has also presented nationally and
internationally, and has published in various journals, including the
"International Academic Forum," "Kobe" and "Johannesburg"; and

WHEREAS, Today, in her capacity as Dean of College Readiness at
Medgar Evers College, Dr. Doris McEwen is truly passionate about
ensuring student access and success; and

WHEREAS, A caring, competent and committed leader, Dr. Doris
McEwen's character and integrity are the hallmarks of her life and work
as an educational leader, a community volunteer and as a person; and


WHEREAS, The Medgar Evers College community is indeed fortunate and
blessed to have such a dedicated and respected educational leader; her
wisdom and contributions continue to reach into every classroom, truly
making a difference in the lives of those lucky enough to work with her;
and

WHEREAS, A significant contributor to education in New York State,
Dr. Doris McEwen has continually demonstrated an impressive dedication,
an unparalleled devotion and an unremitting enthusiasm for the quality
of the educational programs and opportunities offered at Medgar Evers
College for the benefit of its faculty and students, as well as for the
entire community; and

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that when
individuals of such noble aims and accomplishments are brought to our
attention, they should be celebrated and recognized by all the citizens
of this great Empire State; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Dr. Doris McEwen upon the occasion of her designation as recipient
of the Education Award by The Brooklyn Club of the National Association
of Negro Business and Professional Women's Clubs, Inc.; and be it
further

RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to Dr. Doris McEwen.
