COMMENDING the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.,
Albany, New York Alumnae Chapter upon the occasion
of hosting its 2018 Spring Scholarship Soiree on May
5, 2018
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to commend those
illustrious organizations within the State of New York whose focus and
intent have made a substantial impact on the quality of life in their
communities; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to
commend the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., Albany, New York Alumnae
Chapter upon the occasion of hosting its 2018 Spring Scholarship Soiree
on Saturday May 5, 2018, at the Renaissance Hotel in Albany, New York;
and
WHEREAS, This auspicious occasion will also honor five Capital
Region seniors: Danielle Nimako of Colonie Central High School; Nasir
Villegas of Green Tech Charter High School; Gabriel Barrientos and
Tanzil Sami of Hudson High School; and Xavia Francis of Albany
Leadership Charter High School with the Scholar Incentive Awards; and
WHEREAS, In addition, Remaz Omer, a student at the University of
Albany will be presented with the Scholar Incentive Award; and
WHEREAS, Established in 1913, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. is
the single largest predominately African-American, college educated
women's organization in the world, and is dedicated to providing
assistance and support through established programs in local
communities; and
WHEREAS, On June 17, 1967, 13 Delta women residing in Albany, New
York, formed the Albany, New York Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta
Sorority, Inc. to serve those who were not being served in the Capital
District; and
WHEREAS, The Albany, New York Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta
Sorority, Inc. is dedicated to serving the African-American community
through numerous youth programs including Delta Pearls, the Dr. Betty
Shabazz Academy, and the Delta GEMS; and
WHEREAS, In addition, this vital society promotes various cultural,
artistic and scholastic endeavors within the Capital District such as
its annual Black History Month Creative Expressions Contest, Biennial
Debutante Cotillion and scholarship program which are reflective of the
positive images it strives to promote throughout its programming
efforts; and
WHEREAS, The success of the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Albany, New
York Alumnae Chapter is in direct correlation to the efforts of its
President, The Reverend Debra M. Sanders who believes this event will
allow us to take this exciting and important time to pause, not to just
provide monetary awards, but to reward these students and their
families' commitment to the educational preparation needed for
successful lives; and
WHEREAS, In light of its commitment, dedication, and successful
efforts, it is the practice of this Legislative Body to extend its
highest commendation to the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Albany, New York
Alumnae Chapter; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commend the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., Albany, New York Alumnae
Chapter upon the occasion of hosting its 2018 Spring Scholarship Soiree;
and be it further
RESOLVED, That copies of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to the aforementioned honorees, and to Delta Sigma Theta
Sorority, Inc., Albany, New York Alumnae Chapter.
