COMMEMORATING the 150th Anniversary of the City of
Ogdensburg, County of St. Lawrence, State of New
York

WHEREAS, It is the intent of this Legislative Body to honor and
commemorate the distinguished history of those communities which
comprise the noble body of this great Empire State; and

WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to
commemorate the 150th Anniversary of the City of Ogdensburg, New York;
and

WHEREAS, 150 years ago, the citizens of the Village of Ogdensburgh
agreed to become a City under the laws of the State of New York; and

WHEREAS, The community was originally founded in 1749 by the Abbe
Francois Picquet, a French missionary, who built Fort La Presentation at
the confluence of the St. Lawrence and Oswegatchie Rivers as a
settlement to attract members of the Five Nations of the Iroquois
Confederacy; and

WHEREAS, The British renamed the community Fort Oswegatchie in 1760,
occupying it for 36 years when the Jay Treaty, signed between the U.S.
and Great Britain, required the British Crown to give up its claims on
Northern New York, and

WHEREAS, In 1796, the first American settlers arrived to take
possession for the people of New York State and the United States of
America; and

WHEREAS, The residents incorporated as a Village in 1817; and

WHEREAS, Throughout its history, Ogdensburg has served as the only
American port on the St. Lawrence Seaway, the only City in St. Lawrence
County and a major entryway for Canadians and goods entering the United
States; and

WHEREAS, Remaining fruitful over the ebb and flow of decades of
growth and change, the City of Ogdensburg continues to enhance the
quality of life of its citizens, ensuring a positive business,
institutional and educational climate; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the 150th Anniversary of the City of Ogdensburg, County of
St. Lawrence, State of New York, recognizing the significance of the
role it continues to play in the life of the community of the State of
New York; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to the City of Ogdensburg.
