Senate Resolution No. 5022

RECOGNIZING June 25, 2018, as Korean War Veterans'
Day in the State of New York
WHEREAS, Members of the United States Armed Forces, who served so
faithfully and courageously in wars in which our Nation's freedom was at
stake, as well as in the preservation of peace during peacetime, deserve
the highest commendation of this Legislative Body; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to
recognize June 25, 2018, as Korean War Veterans' Day in the State of New
York; and
WHEREAS, The Staten Island Korean War Veterans', the Corporal Allan
F. Kivlehan Chapter, is celebrating its 65th Anniversary; July 27th
marks the 65th Anniversary of armistice; and
WHEREAS, On this day 65 years ago, 135,000 soldiers from the North
Korean People's Army invaded the Republic of Korea; and
WHEREAS, Days later, United States President Harry Truman would
order American ground troops into action; the war totaled over 100,000
wounded United States troops and more than 36,000 American troops died;
and
WHEREAS, Furthermore, 35 Staten Islanders were killed in the three
year war; and
WHEREAS, South Korea had approximately 217,000 military casualties
and about one million civilians either killed or missing; and
WHEREAS, The comparative North Korean numbers tally around 406,000
military causalities and 600,000 civilian casualties; additionally,
China, in support of North Korea, recorded 600,000 military casualties;
and
WHEREAS, No peace treaty has ever been signed so technically the war
has been ongoing since June 25, 1950; however, an armistice was signed
on July 27, 1953, ceasing the fighting; and
WHEREAS, The dedication and sacrifices of our military personnel
ensure our continued role as a Nation which embodies the ideals of
democracy, and is a defender of liberty for peoples throughout the
world; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is very pleased to have this
opportunity to express its gratitude to the men and women of the United
States Armed Forces for their tremendous sacrifices made for our Nation
and for the benefit of all Americans; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
recognize June 25, 2018, as Korean War Veterans' Day in the State of New
York; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to The Staten Island Korean War Veterans', the Corporal
Allan F. Kivlehan Chapter.
