COMMENDING New York City College of Technology
upon the occasion of hosting its 1st Annual Dinner
Reception in Support of Ecole Superieure en Tourisme
et Hotellerie
WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to recognize and
commend those exemplary institutions of higher education within the
State of New York for their enduring commitment to the pursuit of
academic excellence; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to
commend New York City College of Technology upon the occasion of hosting
its 1st Annual Dinner Reception in Support of Ecole Superieure en
Tourisme et Hotellerie on Wednesday, May 2, 2018; and
WHEREAS, In the summer of 2011, as a part of the CUNY Haiti
Initiative, a needs assessment of Haiti's local hospitality industry was
conducted by faculty from City Tech and Kingsborough Community College;
and
WHEREAS, Subsequently, City Tech Professor Jean F. Claude was one of
three CUNY faculty members who traveled to Cap-Haitien, Haiti, to
conduct a series of seminars in sanitation and food safety, as well as
English; and
WHEREAS, Furthermore, these seminars were structured in partnership
with Universite Publique du Nord au Cap-Haitien (UPNCH), and saw 80
participants successfully complete and receive certificates in
Hospitality Management; and
WHEREAS, The immediate success of this pilot program led to the
development and implementation of the first associate degree in
hospitality management in Haiti, giving birth to Ecole Supedeure au
Toudsme et Hotellerie (ESUTH) at UPNCH; and
WHEREAS, The CUNY-sponsored and City Tech managed ESUTH opened its
doors on January 17, 2012, with a cohort of 52 students; and
WHEREAS, Since 2012, more than 5,000 students' ages 18-22 have
registered to take the ESUTH admissions exam, competing for one of the
60 seats available each January; in October of 2016, 80 students from
the first two cohorts graduated with Associates and Bachelor's degrees
conferred by the UPNCH with ESUTH as their specialization; and
WHEREAS, City Tech is now in phase two of ensuring that ESUTH is
sustained and continues to serve as a workforce generator in Haiti; this
phase includes a capital campaign to support construction of adequate
training facilities for ESUTH to ensure students enrolled in the program
receive instructional tools that match the quality training they are
receiving; and
WHEREAS, In today's increasingly global society, it is the sense of
this Legislative Body to recognize and commend those individuals and
institutions which foster global understanding and encourage
international partnerships; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commend New York City College of Technology upon the occasion of hosting
its 1st Annual Dinner Reception in Support of Ecole Superieure en
Tourisme et Hotellerie; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to New York City College of Technology.
