COMMEMORATING the 40th Anniversary of the Food
Stamp Act of 1977, celebrated on May 3, 2018
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to commend those
illustrious programs and initiatives within the State of New York whose
focus and intent have made a substantial impact on the quality of life
in their communities; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to
commemorate the 40th Anniversary of the Food Stamp Act of 1977,
celebrated on Thursday, May 3, 2018; and
WHEREAS, A truly vital initiative, the Food Stamp Act created
national standards and greatly increased access to food assistance on a
federal level; and
WHEREAS, This momentous celebration included a look back at the
history of the program, an overview of current challenges the program
faces based on proposed legislative and administrative policies, as well
as a discussion on how HRA and its community partners can continue to
provide much needed benefits to the communities they serve; and
WHEREAS, Furthermore, the program will included a keynote address
highlighting important aspects of the SNAP program, and a panel
discussion to address ways in which organizations committed to resolving
food insecurity can partner with HRA to close gaps that may result from
proposed changes at the federal level; and
WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to commemorate
events of significance in the history and progress of society; now,
therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the 40th Anniversary of the Food Stamp Act of 1977,
celebrated on May 3, 2018; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to the Food Stamp Act of 1977 Anniversary Committee.
