COMMEMORATING the 20th Anniversary of the Elmwood
Village Farmer's Market

WHEREAS, The agricultural industry is part of the foundation upon
which our distinct American heritage is built; New York State and the
entire United States are dependent on our agricultural industry for a
variety of food products; and

WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to commemorate the
20th Anniversary of the Elmwood Village Farmer's Market; and

WHEREAS, The Elmwood Village Farmer's Market, Western New York's
favorite open-air marketplace, will return to the corner of Elmwood
Avenue and Bidwell Parkway in Buffalo's historic Elmwood Village on
Saturday, May 12, 2018; the market will run Saturday mornings, rain or
shine, through November; and

WHEREAS, A program of the Elmwood Village Association, the market
features approximately 40 vendors selling fruits, vegetables, baked
goods, organics, fresh meat, cut flowers, wine, craft beer, eggs, dairy,
honey, maple syrup, cheese and much more; products available at the
market are always fresh, seasonal and local; and

WHEREAS, New vendors for Elmwood Village Farmers Market's 2018
season include Sitka Salmon, Five Points Bakery, Spar's European Sausage
& Meats, and Long Cliff Vineyard & Winery; in addition, HEAL Bflo will
return to offer free weekly yoga classes; and

WHEREAS, Musical entertainment will also return, and four community
groups will host informational tables at the market each week; the
popular KidBiz program will bring its young entrepreneurs to the market,
while the Wellness Institute of Greater Buffalo will host Wellness Lane
events; and

WHEREAS, Remaining true to its mission, the Elmwood Village Farmer's
Market continues to provide increased access to fresh, healthy food by
offering an EBT program and by participating in the Double Up Food
Bucks, a program which enables low-income individuals to purchase fresh,
locally-grown fruits and vegetables; and

WHEREAS, This vital marketplace also participates in Just Say Yes to
Fruits and Vegetables! program, an obesity prevention nutrition
education initiative which promotes fruit and vegetable consumption; and

WHEREAS, Furthermore, a Registered Dietitian will be present at the
market to conduct free nutrition workshops for the public and provide
nutritious recipes involving fruits and vegetables for participants to
sample; the recipes will utilize local, seasonal produce found at the
market; and

WHEREAS, The success of the Elmwood Village Farmer's Market is in
direct correlation to the efforts of its staff, and many volunteers
whose involvement is, and always has been, characterized by an

impressive commitment, an unbridled enthusiasm, and an uncompromising
standard of excellence in all endeavors on behalf of the market and the
community it serves; and

WHEREAS, Farmers' markets help to develop local and regional food
systems that support family farms, revitalize communities, provide
opportunities for farmers and consumers to interact, promote
environmental sustainability, and support our economy in New York State;
now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the 20th Anniversary of the Elmwood Village Farmer's Market;
and be it further

RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to the Elmwood Village Association.
