HONORING Barry Berger upon the occasion of his
designation as Deputy Grand Marshal of Brooklyn's
151st Annual Kings County Memorial Day Parade on May
28, 2018

WHEREAS, Each and every city, town, village and hamlet within its
borders resonates with the rich and noble history of New York State and
this nation; and

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize and
commend events which symbolize the historical, social and cultural
development of this great State and embody the spirit of the principles
upon which this nation was founded, and to applaud individuals who have
dedicated their life's work in support and furtherance of those
principles; and

WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor
Barry Berger upon the occasion of his designation as Deputy Grand
Marshal of Brooklyn's 151st Annual Kings County Memorial Day Parade, to
be held on Monday, May 28, 2018; and

WHEREAS, On Memorial Day, observed annually on the last Monday of
the month of May, we honor those Americans who gave their lives in
defense of their country, whether in the Civil War which divided our
nation or in times of war since that time, and in times of peace, in
police actions and minor skirmishes, in peacekeeping roles and in
missions to foreign lands to uphold the cherished principles of liberty
and democracy upon which our grand Republic was founded; and

WHEREAS, A fitting choice for Deputy Grand Marshal of Brooklyn's
151st Annual Kings County Memorial Day Parade, Barry Berger proudly
served his country as a member of the United States Army; and

WHEREAS, Barry Berger was born in Cherkasy, Ukraine on March 11,
1941; five years later, he and his family returned to Wroclaw, Poland;
in December of 1958, Barry and his father escaped to West Germany, and
immigrated to the United States on June 1, 1959; and

WHEREAS, In 1961, Barry Berger enlisted in the United States Army
and proudly served his country for eight and one-half years; he
successfully completed basic training at Fort Dix, New Jersey; Advance
Infantry Training at Fort Chaffee, Arizona; and airborne training at Ft.
Benning, Georgia; and

WHEREAS, Barry Berger served in Germany with the 3rd Infantry
Division, 7th Infantry Regiment, Company "E" and HHQ from 1962-1964; two
years later, he was re-deployed to Fort Dix and held the titles of both
Drill Sergeant and Automatic Weapons Instructor on the rifle range; and

WHEREAS, In March of 1966, Barry Berger was deployed to Korea and
served on the DMZ with the 2nd Infantry Division, 38th Infantry
Regiment, Company "C"; he returned to the United States in September of

1966, and was stationed at Fort Benning as a Weapons Instructor on the
rifle range; and

WHEREAS, Barry Berger was once again deployed to Germany with the
3rd Armor Division, 36th Infantry Regiment in December of 1967; one year
later, he returned to the United States to attend special weapons school
and South Vietnamese language school at Fort Bragg, North Carolina and
Fort Bliss, Texas; and

WHEREAS, In 1969, Barry Berger was deployed to Vietnam and served as
an advisor to the South Vietnamese Army in the Delta region; he returned
to the United States in December of 1969, and was assigned to Fort
Hamilton and then to Fort Lee, Virginia, Headquarters Quartermaster
Company; due to problems with his back, he left the United States Army
on March 11, 1970; and

WHEREAS, In 1974, Barry Berger became a lifetime member of the
Disabled American Veterans Chapter No. 154 where he held the offices of
Commander, Adjutant and Treasurer; he is also a lifetime member of
Chapter 72 of the Vietnam Veterans of America and holds the position as
1st Vice Commander; and

WHEREAS, Barry Berger officially retired from Loews Corporation in
2005 as a Senior Communication Specialist; and

WHEREAS, Currently, Barry Berger volunteers as a Financial Advisor
on the Executive Board for the United Military Veterans of Kings County
Memorial Day Parade Committee, where he assists with the planning for
the Memorial Day Parade; and

WHEREAS, In 2012, Barry Berger received the Patriotism Award for his
volunteerism by the United Military Veterans of Kings County; and

WHEREAS, With him throughout have been his wife of 45 years, Irene,
and their daughter, Dyan, both of whom have shown him love and support
and rejoice in his many achievements; and

WHEREAS, As we observe and remember our deceased veterans on
Memorial Day, we recall their brave and noble deeds which have served to
maintain our most precious and cherished freedoms and honor those who
continue to work diligently to support and sustain them; now, therefore,
be it

RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Barry Berger upon the occasion of his designation as Deputy Grand
Marshal of Brooklyn's 151st Annual Kings County Memorial Day Parade; and
be it further

RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to Barry Berger.
