CONGRATULATING Sam Markovits upon the occasion of
his induction into the SUNY Orange Colt Athletic
Hall of Fame on November 12, 2016

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to pay tribute to
outstanding athletes who have distinguished themselves through their
exceptional performance, attaining unprecedented success and the highest
level of personal achievement; and

WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to
congratulate Sam Markovits upon the occasion of his induction into the
SUNY Orange Colt Athletic Hall of Fame; this momentous occasion was
celebrated on Saturday, November 12, 2016, at Kuhl's Highland House,
Middletown, New York; and

WHEREAS, Sam Markovits joined the SUNY Orange business faculty in
1981, and immediately assumed the role as head coach of the men's tennis
team; he led the men's team for 30 seasons, amassing an overall record
of 135-133; and

WHEREAS, In 1986, Sam Markovits began coaching the women's tennis
team and carved a sparkling record of 108-70 over 25 seasons before
stepping down in 2010; and

WHEREAS, Under the able leadership of Sam Markovits, the men's
tennis team advanced to the national tournament twice (2003 and 2006);
he led the women's team to nationals seven times (1986, 1987, 2000,
2001, 2003, 2004 and 2005); and

WHEREAS, In 2006, after steering the Colts' men's team to a Region
XV title, Sam Markovits was selected as regional Coach of the Year; and

WHEREAS, Sam Markovits also played tennis for Colgate University
from 1972 to 1975 and was a Section IX champ in 1971, as a member of the
Middletown High School team; and

WHEREAS, Coaches such as Sam Markovits provide a tremendous service
to the future of our State and Nation, inspiring generations of
student-athletes in their athletic journeys and ensuring their success
in their future years; and

WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is moved to honor Sam Markovits for
his extraordinary athletic accomplishments which are a tribute to his
skill, dedication and commitment; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
congratulate Sam Markovits upon the occasion of his induction into the
SUNY Orange Colt Athletic Hall of Fame on November 12, 2016; and be it
further

RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to Sam Markovits.
