COMMEMORATING the 90th Anniversary of Good
Shepherd Roman Catholic Church of Brooklyn, New
York, to be celebrated on June 24, 2018

WHEREAS, Religious institutions, and the many spiritual, social and
educational benefits they confer, play a vital role in the development
of the moral fabric of a responsible citizenry; and

WHEREAS, It is the tradition of this State and this Nation to pay
tribute to those institutions and individuals who have contributed to
the ethical and spiritual values of their communities; and

WHEREAS, This Legislative Body takes pleasure in commemorating the
90th Anniversary of Good Shepherd Roman Catholic Church of Brooklyn, New
York, to be celebrated with a myriad of events on Sunday, June 24, 2018;
and

WHEREAS, Members of the church are invited to dedicate a brick in
remembrance of a loved one at the new Meditative Memorial Garden, and
attend the Closing Mass at noon when the garden will be blessed by the
Bishop; and

WHEREAS, Good Shepherd Roman Catholic Church was established on
August 1, 1927; residents of the neighborhood of Marine Park in Brooklyn
attended the first Mass on Christmas Eve of 1927; and

WHEREAS, With 2,000 registered families, Good Shepherd Roman
Catholic Church opened a school in 1931; during the late 1940s, the
school was expanded to meet the growing needs of its students; and

WHEREAS, Unfortunately, the church building burned down in 1939;
however, one year later, the current church was opened; and

WHEREAS, During the 1950s, the Church rectory and convent were
built, and the first Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony was held in 1990;
and

WHEREAS, Good Shepherd Roman Catholic Church stands on the threshold
of tomorrow, prepared to meet the challenges of the coming decades while
retaining that spiritual resolve which characterizes its past; and

WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to take note of
enduring religious institutions and to bring such institutions to the
attention of the people of this Empire State; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the 90th Anniversary of Good Shepherd Roman Catholic Church,
to be observed on June 24, 2018, fully confident that this commemoration
reflects the belief in those values which enhance the dignity and
purpose of life; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to Good Shepherd Roman Catholic Church.
