HONORING Gerry Staudmyer upon the occasion of
being inducted into the Rome Sports Hall of Fame on
July 29, 2018
WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to pay tribute to
outstanding athletes who have distinguished themselves through their
exceptional performance, attaining unprecedented success and the highest
level of personal achievement; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor
Gerry Staudmyer upon the occasion of being inducted into the Rome Sports
Hall of Fame on Sunday, July 29, 2018, at the Inn at the Beeches, Rome,
New York; and
WHEREAS, After moving with his family at the age of four from Seneca
Falls, New York, Gerry Staudmyer grew up on MacArthur Drive in Rome; he
fondly remembers his dad tightly tying his skates, allowing him to walk
across Black River Boulevard to Franklyn's Field where he and his
friends would practice their hockey skills; and
WHEREAS, Packing a powerful wallop and precision into his stick
work, Gerry Staudmyer would grow up to become a prolific scorer for the
Rome Free Academy (RFA) Hockey Team from the late 1960s through the
early 1970s; and
WHEREAS, Furthermore, because his coach, the legendary Don Geary
insisted on it, Gerry Staudmyer also played soccer for RFA; and
WHEREAS, Gerry Staudmyer's name remains listed in the top ten all
time RFA leaders for a single season and career; and
WHEREAS, After high school, Gerry Staudmyer played four years of
hockey at SUNY Oswego, where he continued to be a standout performer;
and
WHEREAS, Upon the completion of his studies, Gerry Staudmyer
continued to find time for hockey, playing for the Ithaca Stars and the
Copper City Chiefs; he took a hiatus from the game in the mid-1980s when
he served his country with honor and distinction as a member of the
United States Navy; and
WHEREAS, Gerry Staudmyer has spent his illustrious career as an IT
Specialist for the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration
in College Park, Maryland, just a few miles from his home in Waldorf;
and
WHEREAS, Today, this extraordinary athlete continues to play hockey
with a local adult program called the GeriHatTricks; and
WHEREAS, With him throughout have been his wife, Kathleen, and their
four children, Emily, Connor, Dylan and Timothy, who have all shown him
love and support and rejoice in his many achievements; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that when
individuals of such outstanding athletic accomplishments are brought to
our attention, they should be recognized by all the citizens of this
great Empire State; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Gerry Staudmyer upon the occasion of being inducted into the Rome
Sports Hall of Fame on July 29, 2018; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to Gerry Staudmyer.
