HONORING Tom Barry, Jr. upon the occasion of being
inducted into the Rome Sports Hall of Fame on July
29, 2018
WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to pay tribute to
outstanding athletes who have distinguished themselves through their
exceptional performance, attaining unprecedented success and the highest
level of personal achievement; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor
Tom Barry, Jr. upon the occasion of being inducted into the Rome Sports
Hall of Fame on Sunday, July 29, 2018, at the Inn at the Beeches, Rome,
New York; and
WHEREAS, Affectionately known as T. BEAR, Tom Barry, Jr. enters the
Rome Sports Hall of Fame as a Contributor in recognition of his more
than 40 years of service to the Rome sports community as an athlete,
coach, mentor, administrator, organizer, role model and volunteer; and
WHEREAS, Little League baseball was the beginning of Tom Barry's
athletic career, which included intramural sports at Transfiguration,
being named captain of both his football and basketball teams at RCH,
and a combined total of more than 25 years of coaching at RCH and RFA;
and
WHEREAS, With a steadfast and unwavering commitment to his
community, Tom Barry, Jr. helped organize and run the Rome City
Recreation Department's summer and fall basketball leagues from 1998
until 2008; and
WHEREAS, In 2001, Tom Barry, Jr. became part of the Rome Lady
Rebels, an AAU basketball program, where he has also served as board
member and President; additionally, he established the Annual Shamrock
Shootout Basketball Tournament; and
WHEREAS, This extraordinary man served for three years as President
of the RFA Girls Basketball Booster Club while his daughters played; he
has also been a key member of the Michele Adey Memorial Golf Tournament
which has raised significant funds for Cystic Fibrosis; and
WHEREAS, In addition to giving tirelessly of his time and energies
to his community, Tom Barry, Jr. served as a fulltime employee of
Niagara Mohawk-National Grid for nearly four decades; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that when
individuals of such outstanding athletic accomplishments are brought to
our attention, they should be recognized by all the citizens of this
great Empire State; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Tom Barry, Jr. upon the occasion of being inducted into the Rome
Sports Hall of Fame on July 29, 2018; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to Tom Barry, Jr.
