COMMEMORATING the Annual Guyanese Independence
Parade on June 3, 2018

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body, in keeping with
its time-honored traditions, to recognize and pay tribute to those
events which foster ethnic pride and enhance the profile of cultural
diversity which strengthens the fabric of the communities of New York
State; and

WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to
commemorate the Annual Guyanese Independence Parade on Sunday, June 3,
2018; and

WHEREAS, This auspicious event takes place on the first Sunday in
June each year; this year's parade, "Mashramani in New York," will begin
at Church and Brooklyn Avenue and end at 200 Eastern Parkway and
Washington Avenue, Brooklyn, New York; and

WHEREAS, Mashramani, an Amerindian word which means "celebration
after hard work," will live out its true meaning in New York, through
the depiction of various aspects of Guyanese culture and stages of its
national journey under the theme "Celebrate Guyana-Reflect our Journey";
and

WHEREAS, The Guyanese Independence Parade affords the Guyanese
diaspora an opportunity to, in typical "Mash" carnival-like atmosphere,
come together to celebrate its nation's Independence with a costume band
parade and masqueraders, as well as a sea of Guyanese nationals
displaying renewed national pride, patriotism and national unity in
artistic and cultural splendor; and

WHEREAS, It is the intent of this Legislative Body to recognize and
commend cultural events which symbolize the historical, social and
cultural development of this great State and embody the spirit of the
principles upon which this Nation was founded; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the Annual Guyanese Independence Parade on June 3, 2018; and
be it further

RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to the Guyanese Independence Parade Committee.
