COMMEMORATING the 200th Anniversary of the Town of
Corinth to be celebrated on August 18, 2018

WHEREAS, It is the intent of this Legislative Body to honor and
commemorate the distinguished histories of the communities which
comprise the noble body of this great Empire State; and

WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to
commemorate the 200th Anniversary of the Town of Corinth to be
celebrated with a myriad of events throughout the year, culminating with
a Parade and Firematic and EMS Events on Saturday, August 18, 2018; and

WHEREAS, Some of these events include a historic reenactment and
time capsule opening, Corinth EMS Day, EMS Open House Week, Veterans
Memorial Day Parade, Flag Day, Town Fun Day: Block Dance for Kids and
Teen Events, Independence Day Celebration and Parade, "Down by the
Riverside," International Paper Day, Faith of our Fathers Sunday with
Bell Ringing, and a 1960's Party; and

WHEREAS, Corinth is a quaint little town located in Saratoga County,
on the banks of the Hudson River, in the foothills of the Adirondack
Mountains; the River winds peacefully through Corinth, making it a
favorite vacation spot for tourists of all seasons looking for a place
that has swimming, boating, fishing, waterskiing, beautiful fall
foliage, snow skiing, snowshoeing, and much more all centrally located;
and

WHEREAS, Corinth is well-known to snow fans as the Snowshoe Capital
of the World, and several small lakes, among the larger being Hunt,
Efner and Jenny Lakes; and

WHEREAS, In addition to its natural beauty, Corinth's Mount McGregor
will forever be known in the history books as the place where General
Ulysses S. Grant died; and

WHEREAS, Due to a large number of waterfalls, settlers came to the
area at the end of the 18th Century, and by 1810, there were between 30
and 40 sawmills located in town; eight years later, the Town of Corinth
was officially established on April 20, 1818; and

WHEREAS, The town acquired its name during a meeting at the home of
Washington Chapman of South Corinth, previously called Chapman's
Corners; Washington's wife was given the privilege of choosing a name,
and she opened the Bible to make a selection and by chance, opened to
one of the epistles to the Corinthians, henceforth, Mrs. Chapman said,
"There it is. It shall be called Corinth."; and

WHEREAS, In 1875, 1,659 people lived in the Town of Corinth; today,
under the luminous leadership of Supervisor Richard Lucia, that number
has increased to 6,245 residents; and

WHEREAS, Remaining fruitful over the ebb and flow of decades of
growth and change, the Town of Corinth continues its commitment to
enhancing the quality of life of its citizens, ensuring a positive
business, institutional and educational climate, and providing all
essential services; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the 200th Anniversary of the Town of Corinth, recognizing
the significance of the role it continues to play in the life of the
community of the State of New York; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to Richard Lucia, Supervisor, Town of Corinth.
