Senate Resolution No. 5594

COMMENDING the Brooklyn Chinese-American
Association upon the occasion of celebrating its
30th Anniversary on June 8, 2018
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body, in keeping with
its time-honored traditions, to recognize and pay tribute to those
organizations which foster ethnic pride and enhance the profile of
cultural diversity which strengthens the fabric of the communities of
New York State; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to
commend the Brooklyn Chinese-American Association upon the occasion of
celebrating its 30th Anniversary on Friday, June 8, 2018; and
WHEREAS, For three decades, the Brooklyn Chinese-American
Association (BCA) has stayed true to its mantra: To Believe, Commit and
Aspire; and
WHEREAS, The BCA was founded in 1988 as a small social services
agency whose primary mission was to provide assistance to the growing
Asian-American community in the Sunset Park, Borough Park and Bay Ridge
sections of Brooklyn, New York; and
WHEREAS, Today, Brooklyn is home to an estimate of over 250,000
Asian-Americans; as a result of the significant increase in the
Asian-American population, Sunset Park and its surrounding neighborhoods
have been commonly known as the "Brooklyn Chinatown" since the 1990s;
and
WHEREAS, To better accommodate the increased population of
Asian-Americans, the BCA has expanded to meet their growing needs by
providing a wide array of services, including four senior centers, eight
early childhood education centers, youth-oriented programs at eight
public school sites, 30 concurrent educational classes for adults and
seniors, comprehensive bilingual social services, crime prevention and
victims services, a Chinese Cultural School, as well as community
economic development projects and other community events such as the
Annual Chinese New Year Parade and community clean-ups; and
WHEREAS, With its Main Community Service Center and 22 additional
service sites in Sunset Park, Borough Park, Bay Ridge, Sheepshead Bay
and Bensonhurst, today, BCA serves over 3,000 families on a daily basis;
and
WHEREAS, What started out as a small agency has now grown into the
largest community-based, multi-human services and community development
organization providing exemplary services to countless Brooklyn Asian
families; and
WHEREAS, The success of the BCA is in direct correlation to the
efforts of its staff, whose involvement is, and always has been,
characterized by an impressive commitment, an unbridled enthusiasm, and
an uncompromising standard of excellence in all endeavors on behalf of
the institution and the community it serves; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that those who
enhance the well-being and vitality of their community and have shown a
long and sustained commitment to excellence certainly have earned the
recognition and applause of all the citizens of this great Empire State;
now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commend the Brooklyn Chinese-American Association upon the occasion of
celebrating its 30th Anniversary on Friday, June 8, 2018; and be it
further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to the Brooklyn Chinese-American Association.
