HONORING Archbishop Molloy High School upon the
occasion of celebrating its 125th Anniversary to be
celebrated on June 14, 2018

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize and
commend those institutions of commitment and high achievement whose
purpose and endeavors prove a dedication to the pursuit of excellence in
the education of the youth of this noble Empire State; and

WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor
Archbishop Molloy High School upon the occasion of celebrating its 125th
Anniversary to be celebrated on June 14, 2018; and

WHEREAS, Archbishop Molloy High School of Briarwood, Queens, is
celebrating its 125th Anniversary this year, after initially opening its
doors in Manhattan as St. Ann's Academy at East 76th Street and
Lexington Avenue; and

WHEREAS, Over more than 50 years, St. Ann's Academy, operated under
the auspices of the Marist Brothers, housed an all-boys school; the
school grew to serve students in elementary through high school and
adopted the motto and philosophy of "Not for School, But for Life" as
its guiding educational principle; and

WHEREAS, As the campus infrastructure began to deteriorate in the
1950s, Archbishop Thomas E. Molloy of the Brooklyn/Queens Diocese
secured a six-acre plot of land in Queens to build a new school for St.
Ann's students, which was subsequently named in his honor; and

WHEREAS, Archbishop Molloy High School, which opened its doors to
female pupils in 2000, is deeply committed to the educational, athletic,
social and spiritual development of its students, and is a highly
competitive academic institution, receiving more than 3,000 applications
each year for 400 freshman seats; and

WHEREAS, In commemorating 125 years of teaching and learning,
Archbishop Molloy High School continues its extraordinary commitment to
providing all students in its academic family with the greatest of
opportunities to succeed beyond its doors in college, in careers, and in
their ultimate adult lives of the future; and

WHEREAS, To this day, current students and alumni of Archbishop
Molloy High School are known as "Stanners," a name derived from early
students who were dubbed "St. Ann-ers" and attended the original Academy
before it moved to Queens in the 1950s; and

WHEREAS, Archbishop Molloy High School has been locally and
nationally identified as an excellent educational institution, with
recognition coming from the United States Department of Education, U.S.
News and World Report, and the Blackboard Awards; and

WHEREAS, Since opening its doors 125 years ago, Archbishop Molloy
High School, both as St. Ann's Academy and in its current form, has been
a huge part of the educational and spiritual soul of Queens and New York
City, and boasts any number of prominent graduates; now, therefore, be
it

RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Archbishop Molloy High School upon the occasion of celebrating its
125th Anniversary, and recognizing its many contributions to its
community, State and Nation; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to Archbishop Molloy High School.
