CELEBRATING the 90th Anniversary of the Village of
Buchanan
WHEREAS, The State of New York takes great pride in acknowledging
significant milestones in the distinguished histories of its esteemed
local municipalities; and
WHEREAS, The Village of Buchanan will celebrate its 90th Anniversary
in 2018; and
WHEREAS, In 1683, Stephanus Van Cortlandt purchased 1,000 acres of
land, including what is now the Village of Buchanan, from the
Kitchawonke Indians; and
WHEREAS, The property was eventually passed on to Philip Verplanck,
the husband of Stephanus Van Cortlandt's granddaughter, Gertrude; it was
later sold to a real estate development company headed by John Henry;
and
WHEREAS, A tannery was opened in 1860 and purchased by Alexander
Buchanan in 1872; he and his sons developed the tannery into one of the
largest oilcloth plants in the country; and
WHEREAS, The hamlet was known as East Haverstraw and, later,
Centerville, before becoming Buchanan when the Post Office was
established in 1890; and
WHEREAS, The Village was officially created on June 19, 1928, and
named for the Buchanan family in recognition of their valuable
contributions; and
WHEREAS, The first Mayor was Augustus J. Cole and first Trustees
were Leonard Tuttle, Joseph Yafcak, Charles Brenning, and Arthur E.
Conklin; appointed at the first Village Board meeting was Village Clerk
Harold Conklin, Treasurer David O. Henion, and Village Attorney Robert
F. Barrett; and
WHEREAS, In 1954, Consolidated Edison purchased Indian Point Park in
Buchanan and built a nuclear power plant, which is now owned by Entergy;
and
WHEREAS, The Village of Buchanan has a distinguished history of
being an extraordinary village in which to live, work, and raise a
family; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
celebrate the 90th Anniversary of the Village of Buchanan; and be it
further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to Buchanan Mayor Theresa Knickerbocker.
