COMMENDING Lieutenant General Robert L. Caslen,
Jr., the 59th Superintendent of the United States
Military Academy at West Point, upon the occasion of
his retirement after more than 43 years of
distinguished service to the United States Army and
to this great Nation on June 22, 2018
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to acknowledge the
significant milestones in the distinguished careers of esteemed
residents of this noble Empire State; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to
commend Lieutenant General Robert L. Caslen, Jr., the 59th
Superintendent of the United States Military Academy at West Point, upon
the occasion of his retirement after more than 43 years of distinguished
service to the United States Army and to this great Nation on June 22,
2018; and
WHEREAS, Lieutenant General Robert L. Caslen, Jr. graduated from
the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1975; he furthered
his education by obtaining his master's degrees from both Long Island
University and Kansas State University; and
WHEREAS, Throughout Lieutenant General Robert L. Caslen, Jr.'s
distinguished career, he proudly served his country as a member of the
United States Army in numerous capacities including Commander of the
Combined Arms Center at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, which oversees the
Command and General Staff College and 17 other schools, centers, and
training programs located throughout the United States; and
WHEREAS, In addition, he served as the Commanding General of both
the 25th Infantry Division (Light) and the Multi-National Division-North
during Operation Iraqi Freedom; Commandant of Cadets for the United
States Military Academy; Deputy Director for the War on Terrorism, J-5,
The Joint Staff; Assistant Division Commander (maneuver), 3rd Infantry
Division (Mechanized); Chief of Staff, 10th Mountain Division (Light);
Chief of Staff, Combined Joint Task Force Mountain during Operation
Enduring Freedom; Commander, 2nd Brigade, 101st Airborne Division (Air
Assault); Chief of Staff, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault); Senior
Brigade C2 Observer/Controller, Operations Group, Joint Readiness
Training Center; Commander, 1st Battalion, 14th Infantry, 25th Infantry
Division (Light); Executive Officer to the Deputy Commander in Haiti
during Operation Uphold Democracy; J-3 in Honduras for Joint Task Force
Bravo; Brigade Operations Officer, 3rd Brigade, 101st Airborne Division
(Air Assault); and Executive Officer, 2nd Battalion, 187th Infantry,
101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) during Operations Desert
Shield/Desert Storm; as well as Chief of the Office of Security
Cooperation in Iraq; and
WHEREAS, On July 17, 2013, Lieutenant General Robert L. Caslen, Jr.
assumed the position of 59th Superintendent of the United States
Military Academy at West Point, the title from which he will officially
retire on June 22, 2018; and
WHEREAS, For his meritorious service, Lieutenant General Robert L.
Caslen, Jr. was the recipient of numerous awards and decorations such as
the Defense Distinguished Service Medal, Distinguished Service Medal
with Oak Leaf Cluster, the Defense Superior Service Medal with Oak Leaf
Cluster, the Legion of Merit with four Oak Leaf Clusters, the Bronze
Star Medal with two Oak Leaf Clusters, the Defense Meritorious Service
Medal, and the Meritorious Service Medal with five Oak Leaf Clusters;
and
WHEREAS, Lieutenant General Robert L. Caslen, Jr. also earned the
Combat Infantryman Badge, the Joint Chiefs of Staff Identification
Badge, and is Airborne, Air Assault, and Ranger qualified; and
WHEREAS, With him throughout have been his wife, and their three
children, all of whom feel privileged to be a part of his life and
rejoice in his achievements; and
WHEREAS, Rare indeed is the occurrence of such a compassionate
blending of strength, leadership, intellect, and commitment as that
demonstrated by Lieutenant General Robert L. Caslen, Jr. over a lifetime
of sacrifice and dedication to others; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commend Lieutenant General Robert L. Caslen, Jr., the 59th
Superintendent of the United States Military Academy at West Point, upon
the occasion of his retirement after more than 43 years of distinguished
service to the United States Army and to this great Nation on June 22,
2018; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to Lieutenant General Robert L. Caslen, Jr.
