COMMEMORATING the 29th Annual Tribute to the
Ancestors of the Middle Passage on June 9, 2018
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body, in keeping with
its time-honored traditions, to recognize and pay tribute to those who
foster ethnic pride and enhance the profile of cultural diversity which
strengthen the fabric of the communities of New York State; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to commemorate the
29th Annual Tribute to the Ancestors of the Middle Passage on Saturday,
June 9, 2018; and
WHEREAS, The People of the Sun Middle Passage Collective, along with
Medgar Evers College Student Government Association and Akeem
Productions will present this auspicious event as a day of remembrance,
reflection, meditation and celebration in honor of those who died during
the voyage of the Atlantic slave trade, and those who dedicate their
lives to the struggle of African people worldwide; and
WHEREAS, The program will begin with roll call tribute, followed by
a celebration of love with drumming, singing, storytelling and poetry;
the event will conclude with a march from the boardwalk to the water's
edge to reflect and remember the spirits of the ancestors; and
WHEREAS, This much anticipated observance and its accompanying
activities will foster greater appreciation for African-American culture
and serve to promote the spirit of cooperation that is characteristic of
all citizens of New York State; and
WHEREAS, It is the intent of this Legislative Body to recognize and
commend cultural events which symbolize the historical, social and
cultural development of this great State and embody the spirit of the
principles upon which this Nation was founded; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the 29th Annual Tribute to the Ancestors of the Middle
Passage on June 9, 2018; and be it further
RESOLVED, That copies of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to the People of the Sun Middle Passage Collective, Medgar
Evers College Student Government Association and Akeem Productions.
