COMMENDING Adam and Lydia Illerbrun upon the
occasion of their designation as recipients of a
Liberty Medal, the highest honor bestowed upon an
individual by the New York State Senate
WHEREAS, It is incumbent upon the people of the State of New York to
recognize and acknowledge those within our midst who have made
significant contributions to the quality of life therein; and
WHEREAS, From time to time this Legislative Body takes note of
certain extraordinary individuals it wishes to recognize for their
valued contributions to the success and progress of society and publicly
acknowledge their endeavors which have enhanced the basic humanity among
us all; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to commend Adam and
Lydia Illerbrun upon the occasion of their designation as recipients of
a Liberty Medal, the highest honor bestowed upon an individual by the
New York State Senate; and
WHEREAS, The New York State Senate Liberty Medal was established by
Resolution and is awarded to individuals who have merited special
commendation for exceptional, heroic, or humanitarian acts on behalf of
their fellow New Yorkers; and
WHEREAS, On October 5, 2018, Adam and Lydia Illerbrun, of Mount
Morris, New York, decided to go to their local Dollar General Store for
some ice cream; after paying for their treats, they headed for the door
to walk back to their car in the parking lot; and
WHEREAS, Suddenly, Lydia Illerbrun noticed her husband running to
her right after he had observed a woman pinned between a vehicle and a
dolly laden with cases of water bottles; after realizing he was unable
to lift the entire dolly full of water bottles by himself, Adam told
Lydia to get some help and the other Dollar General employee to call
911; and
WHEREAS, A customer quickly came outside and helped Adam Illerbrun
take the crate off of the dolly; the Dollar General employee fell to the
ground, and Lydia, a registered nurse, observed she was not breathing
and was unresponsive; and
WHEREAS, Lydia Illerbrun immediately began chest compressions while
Adam, who had just renewed his CPR certification, stabilized the woman's
head; after approximately 45 seconds of performing CPR, the woman
started to gasp and gargle; after another minute or two of compressions,
the woman started breathing on her own and Lydia was able to locate a
pulse; and
WHEREAS, By the time the police and EMT had arrived, the victim was
awake and was starting to be more cognizant and was speaking; the woman
was eventually transported via Mount Morris ambulance to the hospital
for treatment; and
WHEREAS, Adam and Lydia Illerbrun were truly grateful they were at
the right place at the right time and thankful they knew how to perform
CPR, a lifesaving procedure anyone can learn; and
WHEREAS, Praised for their swift actions, Adam and Lydia Illerbrun
demonstrated their true characters and genuine compassion for the
welfare of others, personifying, by virtue of their actions, the
collective concern of ordinary citizens across the community of the
State of New York who voluntarily respond when others are in need; and
WHEREAS, Justly recognized as heroes, Adam and Lydia Illerbrun
richly merit the admiration of this Legislative Body and their community
for their consummate courage and valiant actions; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commend Adam and Lydia Illerbrun upon the occasion of their designation
as recipients of a Liberty Medal, the highest honor bestowed upon an
individual by the New York State Senate; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to Adam and Lydia Illerbrun.
