HONORING Alexander G. Murphy posthumously upon the
occasion of his designation for special recognition
by Rensselaer County at its Honor-A-Deceased-Veteran
Ceremony on December 12, 2016

WHEREAS, Members of the Armed Services from the State of New York,
who have served so valiantly and honorably in wars in which this
country's freedom was at stake, as well as in the preservation of peace
in peace-time, deserve a special salute; and

WHEREAS, It is the intent of this Legislative Body to commend those
who have served in times of active conflict, as well as those who have
served in times of peace; and

WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor
Alexander G. Murphy posthumously upon the occasion of his designation
for special recognition by Rensselaer County at its
Honor-A-Deceased-Veteran Ceremony to be celebrated on Monday, December
12, 2016, at the Rensselaer County Office Building's Hall of Heroes,
Troy, New York; and

WHEREAS, Born July 17, 1918, in Troy, New York, Alexander G. Murphy
was one of three children born to Edward J. and Ruth E. (Cadmus) Murphy;
he graduated from both Troy High School and Hudson Valley Community
College in Troy, New York; and

WHEREAS, From 1942 through 1945, Alexander G. Murphy served his
country as a member of the United States Army and Army Air Force during
World War II; he proudly served with the 774th Squadron 463rd Group 5th
Bombardment Wing - 15th USAAF at Celone Army Air Base near Foggia,
Italy; he flew almost 30 missions as a bombardier navigator with his
plane as the lead crew; and

WHEREAS, After returning home from his assignment, Alexander G.
Murphy became builder and owner of Tamarac Plaza Inc.; he also co-owned
Murphy's Oil and Hardware and Edoral Realty; and

WHEREAS, In addition, Alexander G. Murphy served as a member of
several community organizations including the Veterans of Foreign Wars
Post 831, Eagle Mills Fire Department, Bridge Club, Kiwanis Club and
Brittonkill Lodge of Elks; he was elected as a member of the Brunswick
Town Council as well as a member of the Board of Education at
Brunswick/Brittonkill Central School District; and

WHEREAS, For years, Alexander G. Murphy spent at least one month a
year camping in the Thousand Islands; in the late 60s, he took his love
of the water, boating and fishing to his camp at Saratoga Lake where he
spent as much time as possible in the summer; and

WHEREAS, Alexander G. Murphy enjoyed playing golf, skiing and other
winter activities; he was an avid fan of horse racing, the Racino and
taking bus trips to Turning Stone and Mohegan Sun; and


WHEREAS, Alexander G. Murphy died on Tuesday, April 5, 2016, at the
age of 97; and

WHEREAS, Predeceased by his son, Alexander G. Murphy, Jr., two
brothers, Edward B. Murphy Sr. and Joseph A. Murphy Sr. and a niece,
Paulette Murphy Evereth, Alexander G. Murphy was a loving husband to his
wife, Rosemary Harlan "Midge" Riegert Murphy, and his first wife, the
late Elsie P. Hoffman Murphy; he was also the caring father to Holly and
Alexis; stepchildren, Gail, Rosemary (Peter), Kathy (Philip), Holly
(Timothy), and Nancy (Ian); step grandchildren, Jennifer, Eric (Dana),
Matthew (Lisa), Joseph, Leah, Pamela (Christopher), Meredith (Paul),
Melissa, Maureen (Matthew), Timothy (Erin), Kathleen (Joseph), Patrick
(Frances), Meagan (Nicholas), and Adam; and 14 step great-grandchildren
as well as a niece, Beverly, and three nephews, Joseph A. (Deborah),
Edward J., and Edward B. (Barbara); and

WHEREAS, Residents of this great State must never forget the courage
with which these men and women served their country, and must recognize
that no greater debt is owed than that owed to those who gave their
lives for their beloved Nation and to those who continue to be missing
in action; and

WHEREAS, Having exhibited their patriotism both at home and abroad,
these men and women demonstrated their love for their country and merit
forevermore, the highest respect of their State and Nation; and

WHEREAS, Our Nation's veterans deserve to be recognized, commended
and thanked by the people of the State of New York for their service and
for their dedication to their communities, their State and their Nation;
now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Alexander G. Murphy posthumously upon the occasion of his
designation for special recognition by Rensselaer County at its
Honor-A-Deceased-Veteran Ceremony on December 12, 2016; and be it
further

RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to the family of Alexander G. Murphy.
