HONORING Lincoln Peirce upon the occasion of his
designation as recipient of the 2016 Denise McCoy
Legacy Award
WHEREAS, It is incumbent upon the people of the State of New York to
recognize and acknowledge those within our midst who have made
significant contributions to the quality of life therein; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor
Lincoln Peirce upon the occasion of his designation as recipient of the
2016 Denise McCoy Legacy Award, to be celebrated on Tuesday, January 24,
2016, at the Fort Orange Club, Albany, New York; and
WHEREAS, The Denise McCoy Legacy Award was created to honor Denise
McCoy and her legacy of promoting literacy to community youth; she was
the former owner of the Bookmark in Latham, a bookstore specializing in
children's literature, and an avid supporter of 15-LOVE's literacy
efforts; and
WHEREAS, The Denise McCoy Legacy Award honors the author of the
previous year's most humorous children's book as selected by the members
of the Upper Hudson Library Council and the Denise McCoy Legacy Award
Committee; the Denise McCoy Legacy Award benefits Kids Lit Events and
the Denise McCoy Scholarship Fund that provides financial scholarships
to 15-LOVE participants who are attending a higher education
institution; and
WHEREAS, Lincoln Peirce is the cartoonist and writer behind the
comic strip "Big Nate", which is currently printed in over 400
newspapers, including the Washington Post and the Pittsburgh
Post-Gazette; and
WHEREAS, Additionally, Lincoln Peirce has written and illustrated a
book series based on the comic strips that are New York Times
Best-selling Novels; they have been honored by the American Library
Association, the Children's Book Council, and the American Booksellers
Association; and
WHEREAS, At the beginning of his career, Lincoln Peirce was an art
instructor and baseball coach at Xavier High School in Manhattan; he
left the education field to begin his cartooning profession; and
WHEREAS, Lincoln Peirce currently lives in Portland, Maine with his
wife, Jessica and his two children; and
WHEREAS, A true asset to society, Lincoln Peirce's distinguished
record merits the recognition and respectful tribute of this Legislative
Body; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Lincoln Peirce upon the occasion of his designation as recipient
of the 2016 Denise McCoy Legacy Award; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to Lincoln Peirce.
