COMMEMORATING the rechartering of the Sigma Alpha
Epsilon Colony at Long Island University Post on
March 25, 2017
WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to recognize that
the quality and character of life in the communities across New York
State are reflective of the concerned and dedicated efforts of those
organizations and individuals who would devote themselves to the welfare
of the community and its citizenry; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to
commemorate the rechartering of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon Colony at Long
Island University Post on Saturday, March 25, 2017; and
WHEREAS, Sigma Alpha Epsilon (SAE), a national fraternity was
founded in 1856, at the University of Alabama at Tuscaloosa; its
national headquarters are located on the campus of Northwestern
University in Chicago, Illinois; to date, over 330,000 men have been
initiated brothers since its inception, making it the largest social
fraternity in the world; and
WHEREAS, In 1891, the first chapter of SAE was established in the
State of New York at Cornell University; currently, there are active
chapters at RPI, SUNY Binghamton, SUNY Buffalo, SUNY Oswego, and Hofstra
University; and
WHEREAS, The New York Beta chapter was formed at CW Post, now Long
Island University (LIU), in 1969; the chapter dissolved in 1977 after
the University abolished fraternities; and
WHEREAS, In 2015, the New York Beta Colony was formed with hopes of
re-chartering the chapter at LIU; for the last two years, the Colony
successfully completed a rigorous two year review process; and
WHEREAS, The brothers of New York Beta Colony represent a
cross-section of the student body of LIU; the Colony is comprised of
brothers from various religions, ethnicities and nationalities; and
WHEREAS, On March 25, 2017, the New York Beta Colony is expected to
be rechartered, and the brothers will be welcomed to the realm; the new
brothers of the New York Beta Colony will strive to stay true to the
Fraternity's mission of advancing the highest standards of friendship,
scholarship, leadership and service for its members throughout life; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that those
organizations which enhance the well-being and vitality of their
community and have shown a long and sustained commitment to excellence
certainly have earned the recognition and applause of all the citizens
of this great Empire State; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the rechartering of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon Colony at Long
Island University Post on March 25, 2017; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to the Sigma Alpha Epsilon Colony at Long Island University
Post.
