HONORING Emily Pawelski upon the occasion of her
designation as recipient of the 2017 Independent
Sector Student Community Service Award by the
Commission on Independent Colleges and Universities
on March 6, 2017

WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to recognize and
pay tribute to those young people within the great Empire State who have
made strong contributions to their communities and who serve as role
models for their peers; and

WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor
Emily Pawelski upon the occasion of her designation as recipient of the
2017 Independent Sector Student Community Service Award by the
Commission on Independent Colleges and Universities at its Annual
Meeting Reception on Monday, March 6, 2017, at the Cornerstone
Restaurant in Albany, New York; and

WHEREAS, A junior at Hilbert College studying accounting, Emily
Pawelski is a perfect example of the next generation of leaders and
agents of change; and

WHEREAS, This exceptional young woman received this auspicious award
for her remarkable leadership and steadfast and unremitting commitment
to her community; and

WHEREAS, For the past seven years, Emily Pawelski, who tragically
lost her sister to cancer when she was very young, has generously
volunteered her time and efforts to Camp Good Days and Special Times, an
organization dedicated to improving the quality of life for children and
families whose lives have been touched by cancer; during middle school
and high school, she served as a junior helper, and throughout the last
two summers, she was a volunteer counselor; and

WHEREAS, Along with the summer program, Emily Pawelski assists with
Camp Good Days and Special Times off-season programs for families
including pumpkin carving and mini-golf; she also helps raise funds in
April; and

WHEREAS, In addition to her exceptional work with Camp Good Days and
Special Times, Emily Pawelski traveled to the Dominican Republic in
January of 2016, as part of a service learning course where she
delivered a workshop on accounting and business management to a group of
small business owners served by Hilbert College's community partner; and

WHEREAS, In collaboration with ENACTUS and Catholic Charities of
Buffalo, Emily Pawelski is currently working on adapting her workshop to
an accounting and Microsoft Excel curriculum that she will teach to
refugees and immigrants resettled in the Buffalo area; and

WHEREAS, As an outstanding student at Hilbert College, Emily
Pawelski maintains an impressive 3.98 GPA while taking on many

leadership roles in campus clubs such as Treasurer for both the
Franciscan Spirit Club and ENACTUS; during her sophomore year, she held
the position of Treasurer of the Student Government Association; and

WHEREAS, Recently, Emily Pawelski was named the St. Clare Student of
the Year, an award presented to a current student who has distinguished
herself as an exemplar of the Franciscan mission and tradition of
Hilbert College by displaying the college's core values; she was also
the proud recipient of the Kohl's Kids Who Care Award for implementing
the first Alex's Lemonade stand in Buffalo to raise money and awareness
of childhood cancer research; and

WHEREAS, Rare indeed is the impressive dedication shown by an
individual for the benefit of others which Emily Pawelski has displayed
throughout her life; and

WHEREAS, With her sense of civic duty and her commitment to others,
Emily Pawelski represents the best development of the potential which is
inherent in our most precious resource, our youth; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Emily Pawelski upon the occasion of her designation as recipient
of the 2017 Independent Sector Student Community Service Award by the
Commission on Independent Colleges and Universities; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to Emily Pawelski.
