COMMEMORATING The Albany Ride for Missing Children
on September 21, 2018
WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to pay tribute to
those renowned organizations which devote their energy, resources and
thoughtful care to improving the quality of life in their communities;
and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to
commemorate The Albany Ride for Missing Children on Friday, September
21, 2018; and
WHEREAS, The National Center for Missing & Exploited Children
(NCMEC) is a non-profit organization dedicated to helping prevent child
abduction and sexual exploitation, finding missing children, and
assisting victims of abduction and sexual exploitation as well as their
families and the professionals who serve them; and
WHEREAS, What began as a small group of bicyclists who hoped to
raise awareness for the plight of one missing child has grown into the
biggest annual fundraiser for The New York Offices of the National
Center for Missing & Exploited Children; and
WHEREAS, The New York Offices of the National Center for Missing &
Exploited Children distribute posters of missing children to aid in
their search and recovery; since September of 1995, the New York offices
have provided more than 10,628,657 posters of 11,653 missing children;
7,560 have been successfully recovered; and
WHEREAS, The Albany Ride for Missing Children is comprised of
approximately 100 riders who each commit themselves to raising funds for
poster distribution and awareness of the need for child-safety
education; and
WHEREAS, These Riders form a team called The Friends of Missing
Children, and each Friend has committed to raise the funds to distribute
a minimum of 1,200 posters; and
WHEREAS, This year, the Albany Friends of Missing Children will ride
their bicycles 100 miles, starting at 7:30 am on Friday, September 21,
2018, at the Guilderland YMCA; the cyclists will make five stops along
the route to deliver their message of child safety and abduction
prevention; and
WHEREAS, These extraordinary riders will ride in a two by two
formation throughout the Capital District escorted by patrols from the
New York State Police, SUNY Police, Albany and Schenectady Sheriffs, as
well as local law enforcement agencies; and
WHEREAS, The Albany Ride for Missing Children concludes at 5:30 pm
at the Guilderland YMCA with a reception for the Friends of Missing
Children, the Riders, Volunteers and their Families; and
WHEREAS, A community-affirming event, The Albany Ride for Missing
Children is a time to remember those missing and exploited children who
have suffered what no child should have to endure; it is an occasion for
people to comfort and console one another, and a night to celebrate
those who have survived; and
WHEREAS, The success of The Albany Ride for Missing Children is in
direct correlation to the efforts of its volunteers and participants,
whose involvement is, and always has been, characterized by an
impressive commitment, an unbridled enthusiasm, and an uncompromising
standard of excellence in all endeavors on behalf of the organization
and the community it serves; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that when
individuals and organizations of such noble aims and accomplishments are
brought to our attention, they should be recognized and applauded by all
the citizens of this great Empire State; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate The Albany Ride for Missing Children on September 21, 2018;
and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to The New York Offices of the National Center for Missing &
Exploited Children.
