COMMENDING Susan A. Schnebel upon the occasion of
her retirement after 33 years of dedicated service
as an educator on June 14, 2018

WHEREAS, New York State's commitment to education is unparalleled;
its history and stature are secured by the superlative caliber of its
educational professionals and the students they inspire; and

WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to acknowledge
the significant milestones in the distinguished careers of those
outstanding educational leaders, whose dedication and achievements have
been instrumental in developing character and academic excellence in the
young people of New York State; and

WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to
commend Susan A. Schnebel upon the occasion of her retirement after 33
years of dedicated service as an educator, to be celebrated at a party
held in her honor on Thursday, June 14, 2018, at The Piermont in
Babylon, New York; and

WHEREAS, Throughout her distinguished 33 year career in education,
Susan A. Schnebel has been a classroom teacher, building administrator,
and district administrator; for the last 25 years, she has served the
young people of Suffolk County; and

WHEREAS, Now in her 10th and final year as Superintendent of Schools
in the Islip Union Free School District, Susan A. Schnebel has been
instrumental in helping it maintain a high level of classroom
instruction, culminating in a 98% graduation rate; and

WHEREAS, Islip's secondary students have access to career academies
and can earn college credit from five universities/colleges; in
addition, Islip students have earned regional, state, and national
recognition in STEAM activities; and

WHEREAS, Under Susan A. Schnebel's luminous leadership, the
community approved a $3.6 million ExCEL Capital Project, with a focus on
instructional and security technology, as well as building repairs; this
was taken even further in 2012, with the community approving the
Investing in Islip Capital Project which provided funding for much
needed repairs and maintenance to the district's aging facilities, with
a focus on health and safety; and

WHEREAS, Through partnerships with local legislators, grant funding
has been used to support Islip's Business Academy, television studio,
technological devices, and programs for drug-free schools; Susan A.
Schnebel, together with the IDEA Coalition Task Force, partnered with
Suffolk County Police Department and the Suffolk County Legislator,
resulting in the passage of the Social Host Law, establishment of the
Cancel the Keg hotline, and provided the community with cyber-safety and
drug prevention workshops; and

WHEREAS, Susan A. Schnebel has spent much of her tenure advocating
for improvements to public education through her service as a past
President and an Executive Board member of the Suffolk County School
Superintendents Association and SCOPE Education Services; and

WHEREAS, Susan A. Schnebel has also been an active member of the New
York State Council of School Superintendents, serving on the group's
policy-making body for a number of years, as well as the Suffolk County
Heroin and Opioid Advisory Panel and the Suffolk County School Traffic
Zone Safety Commission; and

WHEREAS, Currently, Susan A. Schnebel is a vital participant on the
Board of Section XI of the New York State Public High School Athletic
Association; and

WHEREAS, For more than three decades, Susan A. Schnebel has been
dedicated to the children in her community; all who have had the
privilege to work with her through the years have known her to be an
honest and hard-working Teacher, Building Administrator and District
Administrator who always made the needs and concerns of her students her
top priority; and

WHEREAS, The driving force behind Susan A. Schnebel's commitment to
public education is her belief that all children have the potential to
do great things if given the opportunity; she prides herself on creating
an educational environment where students come first and expectations
are high; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commend Susan A. Schnebel upon the occasion of her retirement after 33
years of dedicated service as an educator on June 14, 2018, and to wish
her continued success in all her future endeavors; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to Susan A. Schnebel.
