MEMORIALIZING Governor Andrew M. Cuomo to proclaim
May 21-27, 2018, as Arts Education Week in the State
of New York, in conjunction with the observance of
International Arts Education Week

WHEREAS, Arts Education Week is a week in which one aims to increase
the community's awareness on the importance of arts education and to
reinforce its cooperation by promoting cultural diversity, intercultural
dialogue and social cohesion; and

WHEREAS, The General Conference of UNESCO proclaimed the fourth week
of May as Arts Education Week for the first time the week of May 21-27,
2012; and

WHEREAS, Education through art is a natural means of learning at all
periods of the development of the individual, fostering values and
disciplines essential for full intellectual, emotional and social
development of human beings in a community; and

WHEREAS, Art education helps connect students to the larger world,
ultimately improving community cohesion as well as creating a more level
playing field between children who may not be exposed to these
enrichment experiences outside of school and some of their more
privileged peers; and

WHEREAS, Students who receive more arts education perform better on
standardized tests, improve their social skills, and are more motivated
than those who have reduced or no access; and

WHEREAS, New Yorkers have benefitted from hundreds of art education
programs all over the State; and

WHEREAS, New York is world-renowned for its rich history as both a
home and incubator for artists from all walks of life, who use a variety
of mediums to express themselves, and enrich our culture; this
Legislative Body supports the goals and ideals of Arts Education Week;
now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
memorialize Governor Andrew M. Cuomo to proclaim May 21-27, 2018, as
Arts Education Week in the State of New York, in conjunction with the
observance of International Arts Education Week; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to The Honorable Andrew M. Cuomo, Governor of the State of
New York.
