COMMENDING Montefiore Westchester Square upon the
occasion of celebrating the Fifth Anniversary of its
free-standing Emergency Department in New York
State, the first of its kind
WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to recognize
those healthcare facilities within the State of New York which provide
outstanding medical care and vital services to meet the needs of their
patients; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to
commend Montefiore Westchester Square upon the occasion of celebrating
the Fifth Anniversary of its free-standing Emergency Department in New
York State, the first of its kind; and
WHEREAS, The Montefiore Westchester Square will be recognized on
June 16, 2018, at the Fair at the Square event where people will
acknowledge all the good that it has done and will continue to do in the
future; and
WHEREAS, Montefiore is a premier academic health system and the
University Hospital for Albert Einstein College of Medicine, one of the
top medical schools and research institutions in the nation; and
WHEREAS, Providing excellent care and spearheading new value-based
models, Montefiore serves 3.1 million people living in New York City,
the Hudson Valley and beyond; it is also home to Montefiore Westchester
Square, the first free-standing Emergency Department in New York State,
and one of the first same day surgery centers; and
WHEREAS, In March 2013, Montefiore Westchester Square opened its
doors and transformed a bankrupt hospital into a free-standing emergency
department, that provides high quality patient care in the East Bronx;
the facility is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and is staffed
by board-certified emergency department physicians and nurses, and
accepts all patients regardless of their ability to pay or their legal
status; and
WHEREAS, The free-standing Emergency Department model is so popular,
that one year after Montefiore Westchester Square opened its doors, it
then opened Montefiore Hutchinson Campus, a hospital without beds,
serving as an extension to Montefiore Westchester Square; and
WHEREAS, In its first year, Montefiore Westchester Square saw 13,000
patient visits; this year, Montefiore Westchester Square is expected to
see approximately 36,000 visits; this equates to approximately 100
patient visits daily; and
WHEREAS, Typically only six out of 100 patients who are seen at
Montefiore Westchester Square each day require a hospital admission; if
an admission is required, an ambulance is standing by 24/7 to ensure
quick transportation to a nearby Montefiore hospital; and
WHEREAS, Montefiore Westchester Square has an average wait time of
20 minutes; patients are immediately seen by a doctor and a nurse upon
arrival, expediting triage, and enabling efficiencies like lab tests
being ordered quickly; should a patient need to see a primary care
doctor, Montefiore Westchester Square arranges appointments onsite, so
patients can be seen within 48 hours of leaving Montefiore Westchester
Square; and
WHEREAS, According to Press Ganey, a national patient satisfaction
survey, Montefiore Westchester Square ranks top in the nation; as part
of the Montefiore Health System, which combines clinical and academic
excellence, while pushing the boundaries of current research and
clinical expertise, Montefiore continues to be an innovative leader in
our ever changing healthcare environment; and
WHEREAS, It is with great pleasure that this Legislative Body
acknowledges this exceptional healthcare facility, fully confident that
it will continue to provide excellent, high quality care to the
residents of the communities it serves; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commend Montefiore Westchester Square upon the occasion of celebrating
the Fifth Anniversary of its free-standing Emergency Department in New
York State, the first of its kind; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to Montefiore Westchester Square.
