COMMEMORATING the 50th Anniversary of the
Rochester Educational Opportunity Center on October
6, 2018
WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to recognize and
honor those commemorative historical events which symbolize the growth
and development of the educational institutions which comprise the
communities of this great State of New York; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to
commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the Rochester Educational
Opportunity Center to be celebrated at a Gala on Saturday, October 6,
2018, at the Joseph A. Floreano Rochester Riverside Convention Center in
Rochester, New York; and
WHEREAS, For 50 years, the Rochester Educational Opportunity Center
(REOC) has stayed true to its mission of delivering comprehensive,
community-based academic and workforce development programs and
providing support services leading to enhanced employment opportunities,
access to further education, personal growth and development; and
WHEREAS, Since its inception, REOC has diligently worked to maintain
a high-quality learning environment, and has focused on teaching
excellence, student learning, career development and technological
initiatives; and
WHEREAS, REOC prepares students to successfully demonstrate
competency in the following: citizenship, computer literacy and
information resources, critical thinking, mathematics, oral
communication, professionalism, reading and writing; and
WHEREAS, Through five decades of ongoing service to the Rochester
community, REOC has earned the reputation as one of the outstanding SUNY
Educational Opportunity Centers in the state; teachers, counselors,
support staff, and administrators, with the support of The College at
Brockport and the SUNY Center for Academic and Workforce Development,
have operated together to give students the opportunity to gain skills
needed to continue to college or obtain a career; and
WHEREAS, REOC's small class size promotes an environment which
enables its students to pursue their career and educational goals;
during the 2015-2016 school year, 896 students completed/graduated, 408
were placed in jobs, 102 were placed in colleges, 86 earned their
GED/HSE and 23 veterans were served; the post graduate full-time salary
range is $26,000-$40,000; and
WHEREAS, Throughout its 50-year history, REOC has always strived to
serve its students with compassion, dignity and respect; and
WHEREAS, Steeped in a proud and distinguished history, the Rochester
Educational Opportunity Center may look back with pride upon its humble
beginnings, find just satisfaction in its purposeful growth and hold
true of purpose in its commitment to serving the educational needs of
the citizens of New York; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to join with the
Rochester Educational Opportunity Center in the celebration of its 50th
Anniversary, recognizing on this auspicious occasion that the quality
and dignity of life are empowered by the faithful and diligent efforts
of such noble institutions of learning; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the Rochester Educational
Opportunity Center on October 6, 2018; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to the Rochester Educational Opportunity Center.
