groundbreaking discoveries which improve the lives of those across the
nation and within our great Empire State; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to
commemorate the 70th Anniversary of Brookhaven National Laboratory; and

institution which brings world-class facilities and expertise to the
most exciting and important questions in basic and applied science, from
the birth of our universe to the sustainable energy technology of
tomorrow; and
WHEREAS, The Laboratory's nearly 3,000 scientists, engineers, and
support staff are joined each year by more than 4,000 visiting
researchers from around the world; and
WHEREAS, Brookhaven National Laboratory was established in 1947, on
the eastern end of Long Island at the former site of the United States
Army's Camp Upton; and
WHEREAS, Originally built out of a post-World War II desire to
explore the peaceful applications of atomic energy, the Laboratory now
has a broader mission to perform basic and applied research at the
frontiers of science, including nuclear and high-energy physics; physics
and chemistry of materials; nanoscience; energy and environmental
research; national security and nonproliferation; structural biology;
and computational sciences; and
WHEREAS, Over its distinguished 70 year history, Brookhaven National
Laboratory has housed three research reactors, numerous one-of-a-kind
particle accelerators, and other cutting-edge research facilities
responsible for discoveries leading to many advances for science and
society as well as seven Nobel Prizes; and
WHERERAS, Brookhaven National Laboratory was initially conceived, in
part, to establish a national laboratory in the Northeastern United
States to design, construct and operate large scientific machines that
individual institutions could not afford to develop on their own; and
WHEREAS, Throughout the years, Brookhaven's scientists and visiting
researchers have used these unique facilities to make discoveries in
biology, physics, chemistry, geophysics, medicine, and materials
science; and
WHEREAS, Since Brookhaven National Laboratory opened its doors,
countless innovations and inventions by staff and visiting scientists
have contributed to research in many fields; discoveries made have
shaped understanding of the atom and the universe, advanced medical
imaging techniques, and created new technology and tools for studying
microbiology, climate and pollutants, energy storage and more; and
WHEREAS, This auspicious occasion presents an opportunity for this
Legislative Body to recognize and pay tribute to Brookhaven National
Laboratory; and
WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body that when
institutions of such noble aims and accomplishments are brought to our
attention, they should be recognized and applauded by all the citizens
