HONORING Joseph Angelino upon the occasion of his
designation as recipient of the 2017 Distinguished
Citizen of the Year Award for Chenango County by the
Boy Scouts of America on May 11, 2017

WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to recognize and
honor those distinguished citizens who would devote their life's work
and purpose to community service, contributing to the welfare of the
citizens of their communities and this great Empire State; and

WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor
Joseph Angelino upon the occasion of his designation as recipient of the
2017 Distinguished Citizen of the Year Award for Chenango County by the
Boy Scouts of America at its 32nd Annual Distinguished Citizen of the
Year Award Banquet on Thursday, May 11, 2017, at the Canasawacta Country
Club in Norwich, New York; and

WHEREAS, Each year, the Boy Scouts of America recognizes a local
community leader for their outstanding contribution to the betterment of
the community and service to their fellow citizens; and

WHEREAS, For his meritorious service in the United States Marine
Corps Reserve and his steadfast and unremitting commitment to his
community, Joseph Angelino has been chosen as the recipient of this
prestigious award; and

WHEREAS, A lifetime Norwich resident, Joseph Angelino graduated from
Norwich High School in 1978; immediately following his graduation, he
began his career in law enforcement as Deputy Sheriff; during that time,
he obtained his associate equivalent certificate in police science; in
1981, he transferred to the Norwich Police Department; and

WHEREAS, Four years later, Joseph Angelino enlisted in the United
States Marine Corps Reserve; he proudly served his country for 23 years,
including three years of active duty, deployments around the world and
three combat tours in the Middle East; he specialized in M60 and M1A1
tanks throughout his military tenure; and

WHEREAS, In 1990, Joseph Angelino deployed to Saudi Arabia as a Tank
Commander where he found himself on the front line in the Persian Gulf
War to liberate Kuwait; four years later, he continued his activation
for the Invasion of Haiti; for his astute leadership skills, he was
promoted to First Sergeant and transferred from tanks to infantry; and

WHEREAS, After his deployment in 2005 was cut short due to injuries,
Joseph Angelino received two Purple Heart Medals with gold stars in a
ceremony witnessed by hundreds of Marines and hometown officials in
February of 2007; and

WHEREAS, Throughout his military tenure, Joseph Angelino remained
active in law enforcement; he was promoted to Police Sergeant in 1994
and Chief of the Norwich Police in 1996; under his guidance, the Norwich

Police Department earned a state-wide reputation for excellence, buoying
the morale of all members; and

WHEREAS, Over the years, Joseph Angelino served as an admirable
instructor and mentor for many up and coming law enforcement officials
at the Broome County Law Enforcement Academy; and

WHEREAS, After finishing his career in the United States Marine
Corps Reserve, Joseph Angelino resumed his duties as Police Chief
concurrently with the role of Fire Chief before officially retiring in
2008 from the Marine Corps at the rank of Sergeant Major; six years
later, he retired from the Norwich Police after 36 distinguished years
of service in law enforcement; and

WHEREAS, Throughout the entire period of his community service
Joseph Angelino has stood constant in dignity, good grace, and humility;
and

WHEREAS, Upon retirement, Joseph Angelino continues to be active on
the Board of the Northeast Classic Car Museum as a trustee and former
President; and

WHEREAS, With him has been his loving wife, Kendall, who has given
him love and support and rejoices in all of his achievements; and

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that when
individuals of such noble aims and accomplishments are brought to our
attention, they should be celebrated and recognized by all the citizens
of this great Empire State; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Joseph Angelino upon the occasion of his designation as recipient
of the 2017 Distinguished Citizen of the Year Award for Chenango County
by the Boy Scouts of America on May 11, 2017; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to Joseph Angelino.
