COMMENDING Charlie Crumb upon the occasion of
being named the Delaware-Chenango-Madison-Otsego
BOCES Career and Technical Education Most
Influential Alumnus
WHEREAS, It is the practice of this Legislative Body to take note of
and publicly acknowledge individuals of remarkable integrity and
character whose endeavors have enhanced the quality of education in the
great State of New York; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to commend Charlie
Crumb upon the occasion of being named the
Delaware-Chenango-Madison-Otsego BOCES Career and Technical Education
Most Influential Alumnus to be celebrated at its Business Reception and
Open House on Wednesday, May 24, 2017, at the Chenango Campus in
Norwich, New York, and Thursday, May 25, 2017, at the Harrold Campus in
Sidney Center, New York; and
WHEREAS, In addition, these auspicious events will commemorate the
100th Anniversary of the Delaware-Chenango-Madison-Otsego (DCMO) BOCES
Career and Technical Education Program; and
WHEREAS, One hundred years ago, the 64th Congress and President
Woodrow Wilson laid the foundation for today's Career and Technical
Education by making the nation's first federal investment in secondary
education which prepares students for career success; and
WHEREAS, Today, the DCMO BOCES is a regional educational agency
providing services in partnership with 16 local school districts; its
BOCES is one of 37 across New York State working in collaboration with
its local school districts to offer programs to students and teachers,
as well as administrators, and the community; and
WHEREAS, Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs prepare
students for specific career pathways through a unique learning
experience which is both rigorous and comprehensive; CTE programs
combine multiple learning approaches to support student achievement
through academic study, hands-on learning, and the development of
technical skills based upon industry-recognized standards; Career and
Technical Education benefits students by equipping them with real world,
marketable skills while they are still in high school; and
WHEREAS, In 1968, Charlie Crumb was one of the first students to
graduate from the Auto Technology CTE Program at the DCMO BOCES in
Norwich; from his first day in Mr. Darling's class, he finally found his
career path and was inspired to excel and learn as much as he possibly
could about the automotive industry; and
WHEREAS, After graduation, Charlie Crumb studied Auto Technology at
Hudson Valley Community College, where he was once again inspired by
another exceptional teacher, Mr. Ashley; and
WHEREAS, After earning his degree, Charlie Crumb worked as an auto
technician at Benedict Corporation in Norwich, until the Director at the
BOCES offered him a job as a teaching assistant in the auto program at
BOCES working with his old teacher, Mr. Darling; and
WHEREAS, Shortly thereafter, Charlie Crumb decided to return to
college and become a teacher; he received his bachelor's degree from
SUNY Oswego, and taught the automotive class alongside his former
teacher; and
WHEREAS, After teaching for 15 years, Charlie Crumb obtained an
advanced certificate from Cornell University, and held the title of
Experience Coordinator at BOCES; in this capacity, he helped CTE
students find employment after graduation; and
WHEREAS, Charlie Crumb then served as the Coordinator of Adult
Education with BOCES; hundreds of adults went through the programs and
successfully found work in new careers as a result of the CTE classes;
and
WHEREAS, Once he earned his Master's degree in Educational
Administration, and a School Administrator certificate, he was selected
as the Principal for the BOCES Chenango Campus; after a few years, he
held the title of Director of CTE, a position from which he retired
after 35 years of dedicated service to the DCMO BOCES; and
WHEREAS, After he retired, Charlie Crumb was asked to serve as
Interim Principal for the Onondaga-Cortland-Madison (OCM) BOCES at its
Cortland, New York, campus; he then filled the position of interim CTE
Director for OCM BOCES in Syracuse, New York, for another two years
until a new CTE Director was hired; and
WHEREAS, Charlie Crumb once again retired and moved to western New
York to be closer to his daughters and grandchildren; after 6 months, he
was offered a job as the Western New York Field Team Associate for the
New York State CTE Technical Assistance Center; in this role, he assists
all schools in western New York to foster new CTE programs and to
improve the CTE programs as an extension of the State Education
Department; and
WHEREAS, For almost five decades, Charlie Crumb has been
instrumental in the success of the BOCES CTE Program; educators like
Charlie provide a tremendous service to the future of our State and
Nation, inspiring generations of young people in their educational
journeys and ensuring their success in their future years; and
WHEREAS, Charlie Crumb has clearly had an enduring impact on the
youth of the BOCES CTE Program, as well as on the community-at-large,
and accordingly merits recognition and applause for his impressive
dedication to others; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to commend the
efforts of those individuals who work to support our proud tradition of
public education by providing their skills and talents to our schools;
now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commend Charlie Crumb upon the occasion of being named the
Delaware-Chenango-Madison-Otsego BOCES Career and Technical Education
Most Influential Alumnus; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to Charlie Crumb.
