HONORING the Rye YMCA upon the occasion of its
designation for special recognition by the
Wainwright House on May 18, 2017

WHEREAS, In the course of the evolving development of this Empire
State, if the ingredients of shared concern and responsive endeavor
combine in the commitment to society, there have emerged among the
distinguished citizens of the State of New York certain organizations
which warrant special recognition; and

WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to commend those
illustrious organizations of the State of New York whose focus and
intent have made a substantial impact on the quality of life in their
communities; and

WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor
the Rye YMCA upon the occasion of its designation for special
recognition by the Wainwright House, to be celebrated at its 5th Annual
Heart & Soul Awards Luncheon on Thursday, May 18, 2017; and

WHEREAS, The history of the Rye YMCA can be traced back as far as
1869, with official documentation indicating 1914 as the year this vital
organization began its journey as an integral part of the community; and

WHEREAS, Remaining true to its mission, the Rye YMCA welcomes people
of all ages and abilities to develop health in spirit, mind and body;
its programs are designed to help people create realistic goals for
self-improvement through regular exercise, proper nutrition, stress
management and health education; and

WHEREAS, With more than 200,000 visitors per year, the Rye YMCA
actively promotes community wide wellness through its outreach
initiatives by offering programs and services that would otherwise not
be available; through their work with Complete Streets, Safe Routes to
School, the Healthier Sound Shore Coalition and the newly formed Rye-ACT
Coalition to combat alcohol and substance abuse, the Rye YMCA plays an
integral role to effectuate lasting improvements in the health and
well-being of residents in the community; and

WHEREAS, In addition, the Rye YMCA works to ensure its programs and
services remain accessible to all people through a variety of on-going
philanthropic endeavors such as the beloved Rye Derby, a community-wide
event with over 1,000 children and adults participating annually; the
organization also delivers free, subsidized or sponsored programs and
services to thousands of Sound Shore residents each year, ensuring the
availability of the Y's benefits to those most in need; and

WHEREAS, Over its distinguished history, the Rye YMCA has
demonstrated continuous service to the residents and communities which
it serves; and

WHEREAS, The success of the Rye YMCA is in direct correlation to the
efforts of its staff, whose involvement is, and always has been,
characterized by an impressive commitment, an unbridled enthusiasm, and
an uncompromising standard of excellence in all endeavors on behalf of
the organization and the community it serves; and

WHEREAS, This auspicious occasion presents an opportunity for this
Legislative Body to recognize and pay tribute to the Rye YMCA; and

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that when
organizations of such noble aims and accomplishments are brought to our
attention, they should be celebrated and recognized by all the citizens
of this great Empire State; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor the Rye YMCA upon the occasion of its designation for special
recognition by the Wainwright House on May 18, 2017; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to the Rye YMCA.
